1080p60 support on Intensity Shuttle (USB 3).

PostTue Dec 11, 2012 7:36 am

Any chance in a future driver will the shuttle gain the ability to accept a 1080p60 source but record @ 1080p30? Given that its a USB 3/ Thunderbolt device bandwidth shouldn't be an issue, even USB 2 devices can do that now. Also given BM advertises the shuttle as great game capture card I find it weird that 1080p60 input support is missing.

NOTE: When I mean 1080p60 support I mean the ability to accept a 1080p60 source but record only at 1080p30 (30 fps).

I don't think that we will get this anytime soon.

The USB 2.0 devices you are referring to are using a hardware H.264 encoder with limited bandwith while the intesity shuttle transmits uncompressed video to your PC.

Also captuing only 1080p30 would make no sense for the application the shuttle was designed for, Video Signals from cameras.

There are a lot of people who use Black Magic capture cards to record game footage. I am a YouTube partner and have done video game commentaries in the past. There IS a purpose for capturing from a 1080p60 source at 30 fps because the Xbox 360 will only output 1080p at 60 fps. So we are stuck using 720p when our device is technically capable of more. Don't assume there aren't people with needs like this just because it isn't required in your workflow.

I just said that capturing 30 fps while using a 60 fps source is not something that the shuttle was designed for and therefore won't be possible (afaik).

I also use my Blackmagic card to capture video from my XBOX360 (But I'm no YouTuber), I also would like to see this feature, however, as I pointed out, that could still take a while.

Also I just want to note that capturing 1080p60 is not yet needed when working with consoles, most games are rendered in 720p or even sub-HD resolutions, until the next generation of consoles is released, 720p60 is enough.

Why don't you just record in 1080i60? The XBox is capable of that and you just have to deinterlace the footage to get 1080P30 afterwards (I've done this before). What I'd personally like to see is true 1080p60 support.

I saw in one of the other threads on this forum that the Thunderbolt version of the shuttle does have 1080p60 support (I think it was shown on a mac), is that actually true and if it is true would that be possible on the PC since the PC has Thunderbolt now.

I tried recording from both the Xbox 360 and my old 5870 GPU@ 1080i + powered HDMI splitter. I got a lot more input lag when recording the Xbox since the interlaced signal need deinterlaced before it gets displayed on screen and the quality degradation when I plugged my GPU in to the shuttle was horrible. Since I have dual GTX 680's now I don't need the shuttle as ghetto PC games recorder but I plan on buying the new Xbox when it releases and most likely it will be a native 1080p60 box and I be able to record that without having to use a non native resolution on my LCD screen for the least amount of input lag as possible.

I honestly thought it was supposed to support that as well but it's not listed as supported in the technical specifications. From what I've reading they silently removed it from the specifications, that explains why I remembered reading it there. None of the Intensity Shuttles seem capable of supporting it at this point. It would indeed be interesting to hear if this is something they still expect to add. I thought that was the idea when they first released it, the current description of the product also implies the same thing (even if it doesn't outright state it):

Intensity Shuttle comes ready with advanced video technology such as HDMI and 1080p electronics, so it will grow as faster high performance USB 3.0 computers are released in the future!

I'm kind of disappointed by the lack of improvements. Same goes for 480P support for the Xbox360. Blackmagic told me it was supported, but it turned out it didn't (which they acknowledged after trying it themselves). The fact is that the Intensity Shuttle actually only supports 720x480p, and not 640x480p (which is what the Xbox uses). I had hoped the product would be more flexible and would have gotten more updates over time. It's a product with great potential but it's difficult to set up and tools like Media Express are really lacking in terms of features and codec support.

The blackmagic hardware is good, but the software lacks functions that are more or less only needed when doing gaming specific things.

I can recommend AmaRecTV to most people that are using the intensity products for gameplay recording. It supports recording with most vfw codecs (I personally use UT Video) and also has features like a live output (a virtual webcam if you want so) that works with nearly everything, for example Skype.

I agree, it's free and it has all the features that Media Express lacks. I also use the author's AMV2 codec, it's a very fast codec and allows you to record both lossless and lossy. It's not free but only costs $10. These two have made working with the Shuttle a lot easier for me.
