Anyone doing Avid round trip advice.

PostSun Dec 16, 2012 12:43 pm

Hi,

I have been testing Resolve by exporting an AAF and media to a second media drive on my system.
It has all been working well.

I am shooting a film on bumblebees. Three years worth of work so I must be carefull.
I would now like to setup my final project in Resolve linking Resolve to my Avid Symphony media files on the same system. Hopefully this is the best route as instructed by the manual.

The original media was imported from a NanoFlash shot at 280Mb/s progressive. This is imported into Symphony as as mpeg iframe file at the same resolution. The media has then been transcoded to DNX 185 to edit in.

I am not a hundred percent sure in the exact procedure to use regarding AAF setting.
Plus the project is YUV colour space ( 8 bit ). Would I change the colour space in Symphony prior to creating an AAF for Resolve to RGB 709 as suggested in the manual. ( Formats tab )

How would it work by grading the media in Resolve and editing in Symphony at the same time.
Or would one still be creating a new set of graded files.

Also, which media would be used, the Mpeg iframe originals or the DNX 185 media.

Due to the fact that the project is on going, editing and shooting is carried out on a day to day basis with no online date being set yet.

A professional take on this would be appreciated.

Cheers

A note to add,

Changing the project to RGB 709 prior to creating a AAF to Resolve as the manual recommends gives one or two options for the media. One is 444 DNX HD and I think the other is one to one.

Just export an AAF to Resolve and point to the Avid MediaFiles folder for the source. This sounds like a Rec.709 project to start with, no need to change that. When done, render new MXF media, but export the conformed AAF back out as AAF (dont make a new AAF) and use that back in Media Composer/Symphony.

Hi Michael,

Many thanks for your reply.
The project is a REC.709 and will use the same AAF to Resolve back to Symphony.
Will do further testing.

Cheers

There may be some specific steps needed if the project started off AMA and uses spanned files (specifically RED R3D).

Hi Michael,

All the media is 280 Mb/s iframe from the NanoFlash. Imported. No spanned media.
My only concern is creating more and more files/media. I have a limit to a point. But I suppose there is no way around this. The project to a point is open ended.

Thanks G,

With all my research plus the manual workflow suggestions including tests, I think I am on the right track.
It is always a good idea to get an opinion or two or hopefully something better if it's out there.
I was hoping there might be a simpler way of doing it but no, this is going to be up to Avid and BMdesign hopefuly. Soon!

Anyway a big thanks
