Eizo CG318-4K & Ultrastudio 4K video signal issue

PostThu Nov 19, 2015 12:23 pm

Hi Guys,

I need some help here as I've run out of ideas.

I'm running Yosemite 10.10.3 on Mac Pro (Late 2013). Outputting signal to Ultrastudio 4K via thunderbolt, monitoring on Eizo CG318 4K that is connected directly to Ultrastudio 4K HDMI output (using HDMI cable that came with the monitor).

This set up seems to be working fine with HD and UHD timelines. However, when I switch to 4K DCI I start experiencing problems with video signal on my Eizo. So the same 4K footage (I tried XAVC from Sony FS7 and BlackMagic DNG files) works just fine when I set monitoring to HD or UHD resolution, but as soon as I switch to DCI 4K, one of YUV channels goes missing, so I get the wrong colours on the monitor. After some tests I've noticed, that it only happens with 25fps projects. So for instance, if I'm working with 4K DCI 24fps sequence in Premiere Pro the problem doesn't exist as oppose to the 25fps sequence. Same happens in Resolve: monitoring 4K DCI 25fps causes the YUV channels fault, but setting 4K DCI 24fps seems to be fixing the issue.

I understand that monitoring in 25fps requires more data, though, according to Ultrastudio 4K tech specifications it should support YUV 10 bit 4096x2160 25fps.

Things I've tried so far:
1. Identical set up in a different studio - no difference
2. Changing monitoring settings to 8bit in DaVinci Resolve - no difference
3. Upgrading Desktop Video to 10.5.1 - no difference
4. Using SDI A output on Ultrastudio 4K and converting SDI to HDMI using BlackMagic SDI to HDMI 4K miniconverter - different YUV channel is missing, colours are still wrong
5. Going through all the signal options on Eizo (YUV 4:2:2, 4:4:4, RGB, Auto) - obviously changing the image, but the fault still exists

Any suggestions? Am I missing something?

Thanks!

At 4096x2160 HDMI 1.4 support ends at 24fps.
You would need to feed signal (somehow) over DisplayPort 1.2 to Eizo.

Do you like Eizo 4K monitor?

That was my though as well.
But got confused reading the specs for Ultrastudio 4K, that clearly states 4096 x 2160p25 is a supported format.

Using the Eizo318 myself and so far just the mini monitor.

A rookie Question concerning 4k

Would there be some limitations to a "Displayport out" from devices like the Ultrastudio 4k?

Ultra studio doesn't have DisplayPort output- only HDMI/SDI.

I´m aware of that fact.
More a hypothetic question about the capacity of DP vs HDMI....

DisplayPort 1.2 is still the most capable connection at the moment. Up to 4K DCI 10bit 444 60p (I think even 12bit is possible). HDMI 2.0 does 444 only up to 4K 30p (444 is only 8bit). You also have 4K 12bit 422, but 4K 10bit is only 4:2:0- very strange.

Means that a SDI to DP adapter will give you some more then HDMI 1.4...
At least as much as the monitor can handle

The only issue is that there are not many such a converters.

Hello,

I think about purchasing this Eizo monitor with the DeckLink 4K Extreme for 4K display at 24 fps and 25 fps. But this Eizo has only HDMI 1.4 which limits the input at 24 fps.

Have you fixed this problem? Have you found a converter?

It seems there're only the HDLink which makes SDI->Displayport but for 2K only.

EDIT : If you switch the output to 4K@24 fps for a 4@25fps project, do you have a lot artefacts?

EDIT2 : Very odd ! I've found this on Eizo website : http://www.eizoglobal.com/support/compa ... _4k-video/ How can this possible since 1.4 support only 24 fps for 4096x2160?

Thanks.

Probably 25p is 4:2:2, not 4:4:4. This way you have enough bandwidth.

Thank you. And i suppose you can choose 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 output into the Blackmagic software?

Check card spec I think 4K is only 4:2:2.

I confirm it works with 4K DCI @25 fps in 4:2:2.

Hi,
How do you force output 4K DCI 4.2.2 from Ultrastudio?
I can't find how to do it from Premiere or Resolve neither...

Output should be 4:2:2 by the default. Untick 4:4:4 in Resolve, BM panel etc.
Play with Eizo settings- page 45 in manual.

It's also very possible that 4K 25p is not supported over HDMI (which is the case for some other BM products e.g. UltraStudio 4K). Looks like spec page is simplified and does not specify formats for SDI/HDMI separately.

Ask BM!
