Media Express GUI hangs

PostWed Apr 13, 2016 11:56 am

Mac Pro (Late 2013) 10.11.4 + Ultrastudio Express (Desktop Video 10.6.2), in Capture & Log mode GUI freezes. At first VU meter hangs (it takes ca 5 minutes), then (after few minutes more) counter and animation also stop.

I can end capture normally (application still works) and recording is O.K, also preview screen and card outputs working as expected.

Has anyone seen this? Is this common bug?

It's most likely to be a problem (acknowledged by Blackmagic Support) with the Desktop Video 10.6.2 driver package. If you're running it on El Capitan then it's almost sure to be the cause. I've had a number of problems on two systems running El Capitan while my third is running Yosemite with an earlier version of Desktop Video which has no problems) and the latest version of Desktop Video. I experienced symptoms identical to yours.

Here's a thread I started on this very topic:

Blackmagic Teranex 2D, Ultrastudio Express, Intensity Shuttle (Thunderbolt), Two H.264 Pro Recorders (Mac OSX) & lots of old VTRs used for digital archiving of legacy video formats for major libraries, broadcasters, universities and public archives.

Well, back to beginning...

In 10.12.6 progress bar freezes. Mostly playback continues, but couple times will stop as well.

Desktop video 10.9.7 / Ultrastudio Express / "new" MacPro sixcore

off topic. UE is not good citizen. We used take analog audio out for studio monitor (we use UE with Media Express as playback device and ATEM sound mixer is rudimentary at best, AUX is allways in etc, so separate out is must have), but in one not-so-nice day we got really bad noise caused by UE, and this was not typical ground loop thing. Only way to get rid of this, is using AES/EBU out w. converter.....
All this stuff is totally unexpected. Audio out works months before this incident. Media Express works months flawless, before this (and xxx happens offcourse during the live event). Damn. :x

Some progress. For us, workaround seems to be avoid using full screen view. So far, so good.

Bad thing, there is no low cost alternative for simple playback. We did some CasparCG testing, but it is complete overkill and too heavy. Can someone sugest media player solution, which would work under headless Linux, and can use separate HDMI output and comes with ncurses interface (e.g. terminal GUI) or remote application for OS X? We know about vlc, but besides that? All we need is low latency simple manual controls and remaining time counter (and clean output without overlays of course). We use ProRes422 1080i workflow. Or can someone tell us, which video formats Media Express supports under linux (we can use DeckLInk SDI HD PCIe for that)? It's too much tweaking for no result.

Thank You very much for any information!
