Switch from Premiere Pro to Resolve with Ultrastudio Mini Mo

PostThu Dec 01, 2016 3:47 pm

Hi all. I'm hoping to get some help on this one, as I'm pretty sure this issue has been dealt with before.

The issue is simple - is there a way for me to switch back and forth between Resolve and Premiere Pro on my Mac trashcan while maintaining video output through my Ultrastudio Mini Monitor to my FSI monitor?

Currently I am having to quit out of Premiere every time I need to use Resolve, and vice versa, if I want to get a video signal to my grading monitor.

Is there a workflow I'm not aware of that would allow for this?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

Resolve and Premiere Pro conflict - strange behavior

PostThu Dec 01, 2016 5:13 pm

Here's a good one. Anyone else out there ever have to deal with this?

Whenever I have both Resolve and Premiere open, I lose control of playback in Premiere.

With Resolve open the following happens: Clicking the play button on the program monitor will start playing the video, but then all transport buttons stop working and the playback head does not move. The only way I can stop playback is to manually click on the playback head in the timeline. Also, clicking the play button on the source monitor does not work at all. As soon as I close Resolve, all functionality in Premiere returns.

What the heck?
Anyone else seen this. Is there a workaround?

Thanks!

When Resolve is open, it completely takes control of the I/O device and won't release it. Same thing with Resolve and Avid/AE/FCP7. Not a bug, just the way it is. You need to shut down Resolve when going back to another app if you want monitor out, at least thats the way its always worked for me

Same thing used to happen between the Kona and FC7/AE years ago

BM devices can only be used by 1 program at a time, so I suspect the only way you can do that is to quit from one as you are already doing

You are both incorrect. Use these settings.
Premiere = Disable Video Output checkbox
Resolve = Release video IO... checkbox

But if you have to go in and disable it in Premiere then re-enable it each time you may as well just shut the program down, at least that way you don't forget you've disabled it then wonder why it's not working any more

You can also enable/disable the transmit in Premiere from the program window settings (the wrench icon).

But you are wrong again! With these options selected in Premiere & Resolve you can happily hot switch between them all day long. I work 40+ hours a week using this setup, I'm not speculating!

Switch from Premiere Pro to Resolve with Ultrastudio Mini Mo

Peter is absolutely correct, and I thank him for this info. I've tested this and works. This totally solves my problem! My bad for not looking close enough at all the options. Thanks Peter!!

Note: Curious, though, why the BM support person I spoke with hadn't a clue about this setting in Resolve, and simply told me that the Ultrastudio Mini was not designed to handle more than one video stream at a time, and that Resolve would dominate that feed until it was closed.

The Resolve feature is a fairly recent addition.

Sorry I missed the tick box right at the bottom of the Premiere picture. I thought you were referring to disabling the BM playback tickbox. As the one in Premiere is always on by default I never really noticed it

One quick note - I've noticed that Resolve does not hold onto the setting to "Release Hardware". I have to keep re-setting it. So, if you're in another package and notice you've lost your monitor or, as in Premiere, the ability to control playback, just hop over to Resolve and re-enable that setting. Luckily, you do not need to reboot Resolve for the effect to take place.

Thanks for all the great info everyone!

Release Hardware is a project setting, not DaVinci preference.

I should have clarified. Yes, it in Project Settings > General Options > General Options.
