[Resolve 9 Beta 3] BMC DNG - Large Renders Grind to a Halt

PostMon Sep 03, 2012 2:17 am

Hi Everyone,

We shot our very first short film on the Blackmagic Cinema Camera over the weekend. Massive thanks to the amazingly talented John Brawley for loaning us his baby, Blackmagic Design and to Cail from Inspiration Studios for all of his help and support!

We're using Resolve 9 Beta 3 on an iMac (10.7.4, 3.4GHz i7, 32GB RAM, Promise Pegasus R6 TB RAID) and have noticed some problems with rendering out massive timelines. This is the first time we've used Resolve on the iMac - we normally use a MacPro running Resolve 8, so we haven't seen this issue before...

For example, if I add ALL of the weekend's rushes (1.33TB's worth of DNGs) into the Media Pool, and then try to render it out to ProRes, it works great and fly's along for the first couple of hours, but then eventually it grinds to a crawl (normally around the 50% mark). It looks to be some kind of memory leak and could possibly be related to this error message in the console:

3/09/12 8:16:31.016 AM Resolve: invalid drawable

I've attached the Resolve Logs as well as a copy of the Console Log. I've also included two screenshots, one directly after pressing "Start Render" and another after I've noticed the machine running really bad.

It's definitely not a show stopper, as we can easily render out in batches without a problem - but it is a bit odd. Is anyone else seeing the same issue?

Any information or advice you could provide would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Best Regards, Chris!

Also, in case it's relevant, the iMac has a AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048MB Graphics Card.

I'm going to try the same files on my MacBook Pro tonight and see if the same things happens. I'll also test it out on our Resolve 8 MacPro later in the week...
