Good configuration ?

PostWed Jun 14, 2017 12:58 pm

Hi,

I'm a french filmaker.

Currently I work with two type of camera :

5DMKIV in 4K or FS7 in 4K S-log
and
RED EPIC 6K RAW or ARRI

The choice of camera depends of my client. So now i need to buy a good machine for the post-production :

A profesional give me this configuration :

Mac Pro 5,1 2010
2 x 3.46GHz Six Core Intel Xeon Processors
96Gb DDR3 1333MHz ECC Ram
1 x 1TB Flash SSD Module
1 x 4TB 7200RPM Hard Drive
1 x Nvidia GTX 1080TI 11GB Graphics Card
4 Port USB 3.0 PCie Card
WiFi / Bluetooth / Superdrive
3 years RTB Warranty

What did you think about it ? Do you think is enough for DaVinci ?
Thank you and sorry for my bad english :)

Hello Romain (Salut !)

I think you need to be careful with buying an old Macpro (it's probably less relevant than in 2013/4)
How much would it cost?

Do you know how those CPU compare to the current Intel line (for example : 6900K or 6850K? Or the Xeon Xeon E5-2640 v4 ?)

The ram is a bit too old compared to the new DDR4 2000+
I would advise adding some more recent connection (ubs3 is almost done) Thunderbolt 2 or 3 + Usb type C (if possible).
That would help your with your external RAID (you need one in Raid 5 or any that can provide performance + security)

PS : If you can wait, Apple announced some kind of new mac pro coming for next year if you can't go windows or linux
Do you still have a free PCI Express slot for a monitoring Card? (you absolutely need one)
For the intensity pro 4k to the extreme one (depending on your Monitoring Setup)

Hey !

Thanks for your answer, i'm very bad in computer science.

The price is 4200€

For the CPU is a XEON X5690.
Yes i agree with you for the Raid 5 and the connection.

Is from here : https://create.pro/configure

I'm not sure I can wait... Because i've more and more project and the new MacPro is announced for 2018-2019 :?

So for you is not a good deal ?

If you don't mind Windows I would use PC with more current motherboard etc. These Macs are getting old (although you're inserting some current elements) and I don't think this is a good option, specially as new purchase. For mentioned formats you may want something better than 2x 6 core Xeons.

So for you the best option now is to buy a PC ? Do you have a recommended model ?

Thanks

For Resolve easy way is to get an HP workstation.
You can also build something custom yourself or use providers like Puget Systems etc.
No way I would pay 4200 euro for 7 years old base hardware, which is actually a refurbished one.
