Difference between Avid DNxIQ and Thunderbolt Extreme 3

PostSat Jun 17, 2017 12:55 am

Hey Guys,

Anyone know the difference between the DNxIQ and the 4k Thunderbolt Extreme 3?

Avid lists their advantages here: http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/faq/DNxIQ-FAQ

but I am just wondering if there are any disadvantages buying the Avid version as opposed to the BMD version?

I assume DNxIQ is just a custom version made and certified for AVID users and backed by AVID support.

I think the main difference is that the Avid Box is usually a few hundred bucks more expensive, and they try and sell support for it as well. I don't think Blackmagic sells support for a lot of their products.
Never had anything go bad enough happen so that I had to send a product back, so not sure if that matters or not.

AFAIK, they are the same product, both work with Avid, both work with Resolve.
(Avid's description on B&H says that it works with 3rd party software as well)

I don't think Avid has the scaled down version like Blackmagic has.

"Audio punch-in: With a front-panel microphone input jack, it’s quick and easy to record audio on-the-fly."

I don't understand if Thunderbolt Extreme 3 supports Audio Punchin or not.
Does it works only using other audio inputs or is it completely disabled on the original Blackmagic device, like any Decklink card?

I find that paper a bit confusing...comes with avid connect? I have an avid connect plugin on my box, which i assumed was installed with either Avid or Fusion. I don't have the DNXIQ.

I have read a few things about the audio punch in, but i was more under the impression it was broken at some point, not totally disabled by Avid. So if you use it a lot, that might be a plus for Avid.

They both appear to have two power cables.

Agency certification??? sign me up :)

Black magic appears to have H265 hardware encoding while Avid has DNXLB encoding (on baseband capture) Neither one of those is a selling point for me right now.

What they both provide is proper timecode out, and multiple in and output ports in a variety of spigots.

I guess the rest of the differences depend on your workflows.
