Monitor compromise : 4k/DCI-P3/10bits/internal Luts ?

PostFri Aug 11, 2017 4:20 pm

Hi !

As I need to buy a monitor on a budget, would help me choose the most essential criteria ?

I'm editing 4k feature film for theatre screenings only
It is 4k footage from entry-level pro camcorders recording in .mov ProRes

here are the criteria :

1/ 4k (is it relevant to watch 4k footage on a FHD display ?)

2/ DCI-P3 (will an adobe sRGB color space enough to have a good idea)

3/ 10 bits

4/ internal Luts storage

thks in advance for any piece of advice and good (and affordable :) ) display suggestion !

Ue search- this has been discussed already many times.
Short answer is- P3 on budget is about pointless. Grade to Rec.709 on decent/calibrated display (which cost way less than P3 one) and convert to P3 on export. If you can hire screening room and check how you end result looks like.
There are really no good budget P3 displays and even if you have P3 display this is still far different than grading to projector (borrowed opinion). Grading environment is also very import, e.g. lighting. You can't put your monitor next to window and do your work in nice sunny room :)

If you really want P3 then I going below e.g. Eizo/NEC level of monitor is really pointless. These are not cheap at all, but still cheap compared to video pro grade 1 monitors.

You definitely want pixel to pixel preview as some edge problems can be "gone" when you watch just downscaled HD preview.

I think you would be way better with renting monitoring than buying it.

I have a Eizo CG2420 plus a LUT box.
When I do grading for theatrical releases I do use my 58" Panasonic DX900 UHD TV set, too.
I grade in Rec.709 and convert later.

If I do serious stuff, I try to watch it in a cinema or do a final pass in a screening room.
