UltraStudio Mini Recorder Not Detected

I'm trying to connect an UltraStudio Mini Recorder to an older MacBook Pro to livestream our church services. The device is connected but Thunderbolt does not detect it nor provide power (no light). The Apple Store says Thunderbolt port is working properly. I'm not a Mac guy so I'm clueless!

have you installed the correct (latest) version of desktop video?

What software are you trying to interface with?

Yes. Desktop Video version 10.9.7 (released yesterday)
Livestream Producer

It works perfectly on a 2015 MacBook Pro. Why not mine?
