Best Video Card Upgrade

PostMon Nov 13, 2017 5:07 am

Hi!

I was wondering what the best video card upgrade is for a 2010 Westmere Mac Pro Tower to speed up my system so that I can cut BMCC Raw footage. (Premiere and Resolve run so sluggish on my system). People here gave me some great suggestions to upgrade my video card -- At the time (a year or so ago) people were recommending NVIDIA 970 or 980 cards with at least 4GB...

I was wondering -- is the 1070 or 1080 better now that it is released and of comparable price? A 1070 seems to spec better than a 970. I hope to buy the card tomorrow (Monday) and was hoping for any last minute suggestions.

Thank you so much! My new question about the 1070/1080, I think, was way too far down on this old thread I posted when I first started investigating my slow system, here -- viewtopic.php?f=21&t=35279&p=374402#p374402

Thank you so, so much! The knowledge from this forum is invaluable.

I am just bumping the thread -- any thoughts on the 1080 NVIDIA vs 980?

Michael;

i have a z800/2x5680/96g, so similar to a well spec'd 5.1
i have a 1080 in it currently, but that's overkill as it rarely touches 20% of capacity in 2k workflows
the newer 1070Ti has better numbers the 1080 on passmark, so it might be useing 19% of it's capacity... still vastly over the real world demands of Resolve in HD or 2k

but really the machine is not well suited to 4k at the best of times, and either is a 5.1 (or 4.1 updated) mac.

if you must deliver 4k, and use a seven year old mac to do so - i would go for the 1070Ti currrently, use source caches to DNxHR444_HDR and export using caches and pray a bit....

still be a bit of a pig like experience, and i have the "been there/done that" t-shirt

a machine on linux or windows, dual 12 cores, dual 1080Ti's is a resonable place to start running 4k timlines, a pretty big step up from a seven year old mac

dual 18 cores with four Titans is pretty bullet proof, i run a SuperMicro with that spec when i freelance, again a far cry from a 2010 mac

I pondered for so long... that I got killed by this bit coin thing :(

Anyone know a place to get a good video card nowadays? Worst timing ever.

RX590 which has official support from apple with drivers and is a bit faster(10..15%) in resolver than the GTX1070. When underclocked and undervolted it has the same speed as an RX580/GTX1070 at only 140 watts.

Thank you so much! How would you compare the 590 to the 1080? It sounds like the 590 will be compatible with the Apple though and give me enough speed to work with the 2k and 4k footage in After Effects / Premiere / Resolve though, huh?

It is a 2010 machine so trying my best :) I'm also going to put an SSD card into the system. Thank you so much for the help !!!

When it's just 2k and 4k I would look into RX VEGA 64 as the cheapest fast card for 4k editing.

Have a look overhere to see the speeds with windows
