I had very mixed experience and it's a lot down to luck when you think about e.g. 3 years period.
I had 24 disks RAID running for 5 years on consumer drives with 1 drive only dead and HP enterprise based 12 disks RAID where in 3 years 3 drives died (this was also used way less than other box).

You should avoid those cheap WD Green and equivalent models. Go for top range ones (designed to work in 24/7 environment/ RAID boxes) and then brand doesn't matter that much I think.

i recommend allways the hitachi (HGST) harddrives (fastest, laudest and less fail of all)
(used in all professionel RAID chassis by all brands)
i sell and use hundreds and only 4 fail in 15 years !!!

today, you will find this hardware only in the WD gold hardrives (WD buy hitachi years ago)
so we use now this drives

Yes, HGST was a "reliability" name, but when you look at my link they don't look that good Go figure.

Personally I'd recommend you just go with higher end consumer drives since you are running RAID 0, and they are most likely not going to be running 24/7/365.

None of them are silent, but pretty much ever drive made over the last 5 to 7 years are very quiet. IMO the enclosure you put them in has a far greater impact on noise production. If the enclosure doesn't have a good vibration isolation system, the vibrations of the drive transfer to the enclosure. Then the large thin panels on the enclosure can act like sound boards.

maybe its just us but we have had basically every seagate we have ever owned crap out without warning - haven't used them for year , had to grab one a few months back for urgent extra storage. Just gave up a few days ago in the middle of a decent size project.

We've had fantastic performance and reliability from Western Digital. Black, (blue and green for archiving) Red - very very few have died. Bought dozens and dozens over the years. Just my 2 c w.

does anybody use WD black 4TB drives? What would be a better solution? Should i go for that or HGST/hitachi?

The WD blacks are older tech (2012), hence the reason i went with the new Seagate Barracudas (2016).

I still have two WD 2TB blacks in a personal machine and they work fine, but their performance per dollar ratio no longer justifies the WD tax imo.

As a general rule (with all creative apps), I say away from WD drives, RED drives in particular. Last I checked they are designed as variable speed drives, meaning they may not always spin at 7200 rpm. If they're RAIDed with other drives that can become a huge problem.

For my money I would go with high capacity Toshiba or HGST drives with enterprise warranties (drives rated for longer use and abuse).

If I were going with WD, I would go with Black drives. At the very least they're reasonably fast and should be no issues RAIDing them together.

I've been running Seagate in a Raid 0 for over 7 years. One of the original set of 4 failed a few months ago so I've been pretty please with those but it is pot luck really. I'm now running individual SSDs on a new system for media and a Samsung NVMe drive for scratch and the performance is amazing. Not the cheapest compared to mechanical drives but I will only use SSD for media now.
