Desktop Video Player for Mini Monitor (mac)

PostMon Jan 29, 2018 12:22 pm

I have tried to find a desktop video player (think VLC) that can play video directly through the Decklink Mini Monitor, but to no avail. The few threads I have found require much arcane knowledge about SDKs and command-lines that would require black magic and no small amount of animal sacrifice to understand.

Is there really no stand alone desktop video player that can just stream through the mini monitor?

many thanks

(and no, I am not on linux. I'm just not that smart)

A few options:

Media Express is a player too, although with very limited codec/container support.

The latest VLC beta is touting Decklink support as a feature:
New outputs for OpenMax IL on mobile and Decklink Blackmagic.

GStreamer has had Decklink support for quite some time (command line or coding required).

CasparCG can playout via Decklink cards.

Most, if not all, of these work on all 3 main OSs.

Telestream Switch supports it, although it's not that cheap. It's a proper implementation with many codecs being supported and it should be color accurate, not like some solutions.
ffplay may be able to send to BM card- no proper player GUI though.

VLC had it long time ago as beta (it wasn't working well), not sure what is the latest status.

Drastic videoQC player also, but Windows only.
There are other ways, but mainly on Windows.

Actually, I have one last question.

When I installed Video Desktop with my Mini-Monitor, Blackmagic Media Express did not get installed.
I suspect this is not default for just a monitoring solution.
I have looked high and low - is there a way to download the Blackmagic Media Express app independently?

cheers

On my rMBP the driver, setup utility and Media Express were all installed even with no hardware attached as I use an Ultrastudio Mini Recorder (Thunderbolt) on this system. I don't see any way of selecting individual packages for install so try installing again perhaps?

You should get MediaExpress installed- it always gets installed. Try again :)
