After installing the Driver 10.9.11 UltraStudio Express on MacOS 10.13.3 shows no image, only a black screen. What is the reason?

it seems I needed a new thunderbolt 3 cable - who knew there were different types of cable that all look identical!!
Now the Ultrastudio HD Mini is working on my laptop, but my colleague also has a USB-C equipped Mac and we're trying to get the older Ultrastudio Express to talk to his laptop but failing miserably.
I have plenty of Thunderbolt cables that work, but trying to connect the USEx through the apple usb-c to thunderbolt adapter is proving to not work. I can connect an HDD with this cabling but not the USEx.
We just keep seeing the Desktop Video box giving the cannot see device text - suggesting we connect via thunderbolt...very helpful as we are connecting with that method.
I have a feeling I know the answer - but here goes...is the older Ultrastudio Express now unusable with newer Mac laptops?
