z840 and PCIe problem?

PostFri Apr 13, 2018 6:51 pm

Hi
I have the most preculiar problem:
I have a HP z840 dual-zenon Win10Pro PC with a Quad2-card. It shows the card in the windows Device Manager but Desktop Video doesn't recognize the card. I have tried with DV 10.12, 10.9.11 & 10.9.7. I have tried different PCIe-ports and different Decklink-cards(Quad2&Quad), the same result.
I have another z840 that is working without problem basically with the same setup. The one that is working as came to me a month ago and the problem child this week, so there can be some changes in the win10 installation but I belive the main drivers should be the same version.
Can anyone make any wild guesses? My is lining towards PCIe-ports and the motherboard drivers but it could be a Bios-problem.
Has anyone else countered the same kind of problems?

This would typically be a desktop video issue, but you seem to have tried variations on that.

There is more than likely a PCIe slots configuration tab in the bios. You can probably set it for lanes and perhaps even disable or enable slots.

Does this computer have 1 processor or 2? That can affect how these lanes populate as well.

The fact that you have tried different slots is a bit troublesome as well, but I would compare the bios settings of both boxes.

Assuming other cards (Non decklink) have been tried and worked, and that the non working cards have been tried in the other box?

Also check the BIOS settings. I vaguely remember something about BIOS settings causing this type of problem, but cannot recall the exact setting(s) that impacted the card.

Have you tried the HP Performance Advisor? It works on Z400s and Z600s so it may still work on bigger, later workstations as well.

Hi,

Have you found a solution to your problem? I seem to be in a very similar postion: brand new Z840 (dual CPU) with 1x 1080ti and 1x Extreme12G on Win10 x64. Driver 10.9.4 and 10.9.5 work fine, but anything newer breaks visibility in Desktop Video, thus can not be used in Resolve.

I have checked BIOS, disabled secure boot, disable signature check in Win10 - no change. Device manager 'sees' the video card, driver versions reflects installed Desktop Video version. Swapping slots (5>4), uninstalling, re-installing, powercycling - no change.

Going from 10.9.4 to 10.9.5 initiated a firmware upgrade, but it did not change the behavior. I have set up three identical Z840s with three Extreme12Gs - so an individual hardware fault is very unlikely. BMD support is very solicitous but is not able to provide required BIOS settings.

Actually these sound like two totally different issues. The OP could get his to work in 1 box...but it worked in another box with a similar setup. This would indicate hardware fault or bios setting in the box.

Your setup worked until you changed drivers, and a firmware upgrade, which would indicate a driver issue, or possibly a faulty BM firmware.

Either way i think your issue is with BM, not the PC.

Hi Ole,

Yes, that did it. All three machines are working fine now as far as I can tell. Still wondering why BMD is not aware of the issue. Thank you very much for pointing me in the right direction!

Cheers
