Need a recommendation for a breakout box for Mac with XLR

PostMon May 21, 2018 6:15 pm

I am getting all kinds of crackling sounds and noise through my speakers especially when using my eGPU.

I think a dedicated USB to XLR audio output device would solve the issue. Can anyone recommend either:
1. An inexpensive USB breakout box with XLR audio outputs for Mac
or
2. A good thunderbolt breakout box with at least 2 XLR audio outputs AND HDMI AND optical audio?

I looked at the Ultrastudio 4k and its super expensive at $995 and does way more than I need, not to mention that nearly all the reviews are complaining about the fan being super loud. This is going in the edit bay so it needs to be quiet.

Thanks for the help~

How are your speakers connected currently?

The reason I ask is that if all you need is a USB audio interface/DAC to go to your monitors instead of using the headphone or optical line out jack on your Mac Pro, you could use something like the Audioengine D1 to connect to powered speakers via RCA rather than XLR.

If you really need XLR out, one option (but quite a bit more expensive) might be the Sound Devices USBPre 2, which has a good range of outputs including XLR and is a very solid unit; it would probably last 20 years or more. It's overkill for what you need, but that's also true for most of the "breakout boxes" I'm seeing online. And if you ever need an audio interface for recording the USBPre2 has excellent preamps and a variety of inputs as well as outputs; it's a Swiss Army knife in that regard. I have one of these.
Resolve 18 Studio, Mac Pro 3.0 GHz 8-core, 32 gigs RAM, dual AMD D700 GPU.
