Teranex or Decklink for DVCAM HD capture to PC/Mac

PostFri Aug 24, 2018 4:11 pm

Hi, I have about 100 movies to digitise. The film prints of these movies are not available anymore. Only DVCam/Betacam/Digibeta tapes are available. My client wants maximum quality from these tapes.
If I choose Teranex,
1. Can I get good HD quality through SD to HD upscaling.
2.Do I need additional capture card to capture the out from Teranex or can I use thunderbolt port to capture the Teranex out.
@ Colin Barrett your expert advice will be helpful for me.
Thank you

Do you have all those formats for different originals or are these alternatives?
If all is on DigiBeta, go for that.
Is the footage all progressive, coming from film, or was pulldown applied?

Your questions:

"1. Can I get good HD quality through SD to HD upscaling."
In theory, yes. But it depends a lot on your originals, for example if they are interlaced and if they have any edge 'enhancement' (sharpening).

"2.Do I need additional capture card to capture the out from Teranex or can I use thunderbolt port to capture the Teranex out."
You'll need an I/O device, there is no Thunderbolt port, it only looks like it. It's a bare USB-C connector for firmware upgrades.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

The old teranex 2 or 3D had thunderbolt for capture purposes..

But they are retired and not available anymore.. The new units are indeed USB-C and have no capture option anymore. So you need a Decklink capture card for in your machine or some external capture device. ;)

Hi, Thank you for your detailed explanation.
Not all films have Digibeta sources. some are betcam, some are dvcam and some are U-matic.
Can you explain the best workflow for capturing each tapes. As the Digibeta player have SDI port, I think I can capture that with Decklink capture card. What workflow is suitable for Betacam, DVCam and U-MATIC in Which I can get maximum quality.

Also can you suggest which upscaling is best. Software or Hardware.
Regards
