Is the Retina 4k 3.4GHz iMac ok for editing 4k ProRes?

Do you have questions about Desktop Video, Converters, Routers and Monitoring?

Is the Retina 4k 3.4GHz iMac ok for editing 4k ProRes?

PostFri Sep 07, 2018 3:25 am

I apologize if this is a too obvious question, but I've been googling this for the past few days, and I seem to get conflicting results.

This iMac with the specs listed below, currently being sold by Apple, has it got the chutzpah to handle editing 4k ProRes footage, and running Resolve? I know that dealing with RAW is another matter, but I see myself mainly dealing with ProRes for the time being (non-professionally).

3.4GHz quad-core 7th-generation Intel Core i5 processor
Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz
8GB 2400MHz memory, configurable up to 32GB
1TB Fusion Drive1
Radeon Pro 560 with 4GB video memory
Two Thunderbolt 3 ports

I understand that adding RAM and storage space is always beneficial, but will that machine, with those specs, be a reasonable option? It lands right at my budget.

Humbly and gratefully yours,
Toby

It will be limited if you need temporal NR or similar complex filtering, I'd go for the model with the Radeon 580 Pro.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Toby, if you can add more memory. Resolve recommends a minimum 16GB but I’d say it’s much better at 32GB.

Seconded, in particular if you want to use Fusion.
