Apple Thunderbolt Display 27' as A/V device

PostMon Sep 17, 2018 8:02 am

Greetings

I'm looking into ways of connecting an Apple Thunderbolt Display as an additional monitor for editing. Not as an extended desktop, but as an A/V device so it would be able to work as a fullscreen duplicate of the viewer in Resolve and FCPX.

I know that I need some sort of an I/O device for that. The computer I work with is a 2015 iMac 5K with Thunderbolt 2. The issue is that the monitor also works via Thunderbolt, but a direct connection would result in the extended desktop mode. Also, the monitor is natively 2.5K resolution, and there was no 1080p option to switch to in the menu, which is the prerequisite on many devices. It almost seems as if Apple has gone to great lengths to avoid the monitor to be used for anything other than the extended desktop.

I keep seeing advertising material with the monitor being used just this way all over BMD website. Am I missing something?
