Ultrastudio Mini Thunderbolt question

PostMon Sep 17, 2018 2:15 pm

Hi
I'm planning to change my laptop soon, and I'm not familiar with Thunderbolt yet...
The envisioned laptop (hi-end) has only one Thunderbolt 3 port (and two USB 3.0 ports for that matter).
I plan to connect a "docking" device to the Thunderbolt port of the laptop, allowing more downstream USB 2.0 & 3.0 etc connexions. But the dock only has one Thunderbolt 3 downtream port too.
So, if I'm attaching a Ultrastudio Mini Monitor to that single T3 port (either on the dock, or on the laptop if the dock isn't connected), there is no way to use another T3/USB-C device concurrently, like a Ultrastudio mini Recorder, despite T3's daisy-chaining capabilities, am I right ?

No daisy chaining there. That's why I got a MBP 13" for working on the road. Even if it has one controller only, it has two ports.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Well, in the meantime, I realized that the UltraStudio Mini Monitor has an older Thunderbolt interface (Apple specific, right ?), and was hence designed to work with Mac computers.
But now I understand Thunderbolt 3 has been opened to non-Apple platforms; will I be able to connect the UltraStudio Mini Monitor to my new Windows laptop's Thunderbolt3/USB-C port ? With a simple cable or a converter ?
Is this combo tested and supported (UltraStudio Mini Monitor -> Windows10 PC) ?
Or should I lean towards the Ultrastudio HD Mini (overkill for me) with its native Thunderbolt3 connection ?
Or the older Intensity Shuttle / USB3 ?

Ultrastudio Mini Monitor on Win10 laptop w/ Thunderbolt3

PostFri Sep 28, 2018 9:53 am

Is anyone successfully using the UltraStudio Mini Monitor on a recent Windows10 laptop with Thunderbolt 3 connector ?
I need ASAP to know before buying ...(my reseller isn't sure, but tells me the Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 interface cable from Apple may very well not work on a Windows PC...)

Thank you !

I do. Look for Thunderbolt 3 -> 2 adapter at Amazon. Can't give you a link now, but it works :)

For some reason I can't seem to be able to send you a PM...so

The original Apple Th3 -> Th2 adapter is apparently the most relevant product on Amazon..Is that the one you're using ? There's also a Startech adapter, more bulky, more expensive...

Is there any reason why an eGPU-box(TB3) plus a DecLink card wouldn't work?

I received the letter from you, responded. But, to be sure: [Certified] Cable Matters Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter for Windows & Mac - Supporting Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01D0D7QU0/re ... SBbXC90KGM

OK, that one didn't appear in a first instance on an Amazon search on this side of the ocean ;-) but it also appears more expensive than the Apple cable ?
Now I just have to decide between
- Ultrastudio Mini Monitor + Th3-Th2 converter
or
- Utrastudio HD mini (with more features of course)
;)
