4k/5k Video being color corrected and graded on reg monitor

PostWed Feb 27, 2019 6:22 pm

Noob question.

Does the 4k or 5k video just relate to higher resolution and not color? Should the monitor for color correction and grading just be able to display an REC 709 or RGB color space accurately?

Thanks

You can can grade 4K on an HD monitor just fine, so long as it's calibrated, and you've set up your monitoring correctly.

It's done a lot, even in the movie industry, where films are often graded on a 2K projector, but rendered in 4K.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Ok thanks! Do you guys have any links that I can read up on in regards to calibrating the monitor for video possibly broadcast and web? Whats the most popular profile's, can the same profile be used for both broadcast and web or are there different ones for each instance. Sorry for the questions.

Thanks

Rec. 709 is "normal" for broadcast and looks fine for web. It's important to note that you can only get accurate color monitoring out of Resolve using a Blackmagic output device (DeckLink/UltraStudio), see page 1885 of the manual.

In regards to Decklink. Im trying to figure the workflow out. So we do our editing and color correction/grading on our calibrated monitors without decklink etc. But then view the edited or color graded material through or decklink box because that will be a more accurate reference of the standard? Or does the decklink the connection between monitor and computer during the color correction process? Like for example in Audio sometimes engineers playback there material on different sets of reference speakers that are more accurate sounding but engineer on a completely different set of speakers.

The Decklink is used during the whole process, it's the only way to get a color accurate 10-bit display from Resolve. See page 1885 in the manual for info on why the preview windows are not sufficient for color-managed work.
