H.264 Pro recorder with VO-9800p 3/4" U-matic VTR

Good evening

I'm trying to setup a system to capture almost 200 Umatic and UmaticS. Not my particular area, but have explored a little and found a VO-9800p and the H.264 Pro recorder seems to meet our expectations.

I know that a TBC or other components maybe necessary. Can someone help me install a system based on a VO-9800p and the H.264 Pro recorder configuration?

The best way to normally do this is to use a frame synchroniser
I would have recommended the Terranex AV which supports Analog inputs.
However the flywheel input synch circuits do not cope up well with time base errors coming from
a VO9800.

So you can either look out for 2nd hand SD frame synchronisers like For-A , Snell and Willcox or youcan look up the Yellow Brick PDV1800. I have not tried it though but it does promise a flywheel synchroniser for problematic sources and i guess the VO9800 falls in that category

Remember that with the PDV1800 you will need an A to D converter
Audio will be leading in your transfers and will need to be resynced

I think a better solution would be to invest in a 3/4" machine with a built-in TBC. The Sony BVU-950 or BVU-900 would work well, provided the heads are well-aligned and not worn out. Any good capture card can take the output of the machine, and the Blackmagic cards are as good as any (and fairly affordable). Media Express works pretty well as a capture utility.

Hi, you can get a cheap DVD recorder (eg. Panasonic DMR ES-15 or ES-10) which may be used as a Frame Sync/TBC pass-thru, so that you can take advantage of its component output. All you need is some BNC male to RCA female adapters.

Will start to implement a small solution using the panasonic as passthrough. If the output is ok, will start to transfer the tapes.
