Resolve 15 stable enough to switch from 14?

PostThu Apr 04, 2019 3:53 pm

Hi everyone!
I think the title speaks for itself. I’ve been getting familiar with resolve only since 11... but found my version of Davinci Resolve 14 Studio (paid) to be quite stable, minus a few hiccups here and there (like no exporting 4K h.264 — i usually export at 2k.... I only edit in 4K and use for extra framing, stabilization, and zoom effects/etc).

I worked on completing a 50min doc, 12min mini-doc, a 15min mini-doc and a couple small 4-5min ad-like docs with Resolve 14 and didn’t really have any major problems so my confidence in its stability is high. I would love to have Fairchild audio work more solidly, which is fairly unusable in 14 (for me) which resolve 15 appears to have working currently.... along with integrated Fusion (to learn instead of Adobe After FX, which I use minimally just for titles and such). Oh yeah, and I could export AAF files to my sound guy, which made life difficult then :) (even with attempted sound export work arounds)

My point is I’m about to launch into another round of longer docs and mini-docs, so I don’t want to switch and then get myself into trouble.

In case it helps in recommendation, I have dual GPU NVidia P5000, 64 Gig Ram, 24 Core, HP Z840 Workstation.

Thanks so much for your time in answering!! I usually just want to upgrade to the next ‘best’ version, but when I see the problems being reported more than the praise I just held off on it. I guess I’m looking for a good perspective to set me clear on this.

I know this takes time from the things you have to do in life, family, work, down time, hobbies, etc so thanks so much for taking the time to answer!

Brian

Resolve 15 is stable. Do a check of your system to be sure it is powerful enough. You don't state your GPU VRAM, which is the most critical part for Resolve use.

Hey thanks so much your reply, and the good news!! I have two P5000 ... each have 16GB of VRAM... so I guess that’s 32GB of VRAM (if it’s all usable).

No you have 16gb. You can not add gpu memory in resolve in multi gpu setups. You have the amount of the smallest card, which in your case is 16. Still massive ;-)

Well, the NAB demos will start happening Monday morning. Release Candidate and Public Betas follow with general release (at least for the last several versions) around IBC time in September. But yeah, :D

Use caution -- Resolve 16 is still in Beta and most likely will be for another few months (as Joe says above).

I think 15.3x has been pretty stable and I think you could safely upgrade without a problem. Follow Patrick Inhofer's advice on how to upgrade, and make sure you make a complete system backup just in case.

I think the same advice applies to 16, but I would avoid it until it's more stable and the features are locked.

Ok, great! I’ll probably wait a few months then, just in case. I’m already reading the site just to get a feel for the process of safety upgrading. Thanks for the link!
