feature request - cineform debayering support

PostThu Sep 13, 2012 10:39 pm

Would love to be able to grade CINEFORM files and access the metadata for colour, white balance and sharpening/ debayering.

Silicon Imaging and GoPro cameras shoot direct to cineform.

Please add support!

We have Cineform .mov read support. And various levels of Cineform render support, which depends on having GoPro Cineform Studio of various levels installed. This is the Cineform render matrix for Mac:

- With nothing installed, you will not be able to render to Cineform
- With Cineform Studio (free version) you should be able to render YUV 422 at HD or lower.
- With Cineform Premium and Professional, you should be able to render YUV and RGB at HD and greater than HD.

We do not treat Cineform as a Raw camera format, so you do not have the ability to manipulate the metadata settings in Resolve.

Hm, I have GO PRO professional installed, the options I see in QT render is Cineform 16bit RGB and cineform 10 bit YUV.

I shoot on the si2k digital cinema camera and it shoots to CINEFORM RAW 12 BIT.
I need to be able to access the metadata of this camera.
I would like to be able to render out in the same format RAW at 12bit.

How difficult would it be to implement this?

Thanks!

Does this apply even to the Cineform RAW converted DNGs from the BMCC?

Basically I'm wondering if Resolve will have the same control of the Cineform RAW files as the original DNGs.

There is a patch from Cineform that allows to use the CIneform debaiering (and all other features) for CineformRaw files within in Resolve.

There is?

And that will give me access to the BMD Color space and treat the Cineform RAW file as though it were a DNG?

I can't find this patch. Any links to the CIneform site?

This will allow full CineformRAW metadata based color corrections to be visible in Resolve. This will also mean you are using CineForm based Demosaic filter rather than the one Resolve normally uses. The change above was to restore demosaic control so that your filter setting in GoPro CineForm Studio is applied inside Resolve.

Thanks a million! Does this affect any other files read by Resolve? Or only Cineform files?

Also, are there any downsides to using this?

I feel as though if it were all positive, it wouldn't need to be a "hack", it would simply be the way...

It affects only Cineform files.
And it's not a "hack" - look at it as a micro update of Cineform.

Hello all

Can someone please explain how I access the raw metadata of a CineformRaw file in the Mac version of Resolve 10b3? I understand this version now supports this functionality.

Thanks.

...or you can use Cineform raw as a very high quality, yet small-size proxy. Cut in CineformRAW, then online it and finish to DNGs if you wish. Then Cineform debayering (which BTW is not bad at all) won't matter.

You can get your private beta of the BMCC (or other raw frames) to CineformRAW converter here.

Please allow access to the metadata from Cineform RAW files! =]

Cineform is a viable alternative to the huge DNG files the Black Magic Camera generates... it preserves 95% of the quality but at about 14% of the filesize. And it can play in realtime in your editing application, eliminating the need for proxies. About the only weak link right now is that it has limited functionality from within Resolve.

Cineform's "hack/micro-update" mentioned in this thread establishes a workaround, but not a proper solution. It forces you to use GoPro Studio to change the metadata, along with its inferior debayering algorithms. Plus it only works for Windows.

We love Resolve's superior quality, workflow and tools... so pretty please let us work with this format?

Thanks!

Raking up this issue again. Any chance of Resolve recognising Cineform as Raw with full metadata support in near future? This would resolve many issues for us...

The people who would make this change do not read these forums. Submit a formal request via email. I did this some months back and I was politely told that this was not a priority for them... but enough people request it, maybe they'll reconsider 8-)
