help with color correction for scuba diving

PostSun Sep 08, 2019 3:24 pm

Hi,
First of all I would like to say that I am far from being any expert in post-processing or anything like that. However, I've been seeing a lot of youtube clips explaining how to color correct the videos taken underwater. Obviously, the main issue is the fact that the level of the color red is being reduce as you go deeper. I am able to correct the balance between the colors in the color section of Resolve however, the end result is that the picture becomes almost like b&w - it looses all the vivid colors that you have. Strangely enough - if I take the same clip and use a free app on my phone (Dive+) the colors are just gorgeous - so to me it means that the info is there but I am doing something wrong.
Whatever I am trying to do - as soon as the balance between the RGB colors becomes more equal - the video begins to look like black and white almost - I would really appreciate any help here...
I am attaching a photo that shows the before and after via the android app - which there is nothing I was able to do via resolve to achieve anything remotely closed to this quality...

Thanks in advance!!!
Itay

One can only modify the WB so much in post before the colors get muddy. Especially to UW stuff. But adding a lot more magenta might help.
Although not the topic...While underwater I always set the WB manually in my camera at time of capture using a white slate and a camera that supports setting white balance manually..this gets it as close to right so that post corrections are minimal. I also almost always use video lights underwater too..to return the lost sunlight spectrum. Underwater video is really a difficult thing due to the harsh spectrum absorption..its taken me many years to figure out.
