DaVinci Resolve 14 beta 7 SLOW

PostTue Aug 22, 2017 6:58 pm

DaVinci is unusable. It's running so slow, I can't even play a video the frame rates are ridiculously slow! I've lowered everything to a quarter and still nothing. So editing anything in it is impossible. I would still have to use Premiere and export for color, which is not what I want to do.

Running OS X El Capitan 10.11.6
Mac Pro (Early 2009) 2x2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (8 cores)
32 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD
Graphcis AMD Radeon HD 7xxx Saphire 3072 MB

Is there something I maybe missing?

Also, lack of support here....

I get horrible colors, like glitches in Color mode. Tried various settings. Not using CUDA since my Saphire HD does not support that, set to open CL.

I just can't seem to use this software at all!

You have a really old machine with a card that's not supported by Resolve. What you're missing is a faster machine with a much more powerful GPU. :D

It's not "that" old however, I've done many upgrades over the years. I've benchmarked this computer against some of the new computers and it still out performs.

Also, it was working just fine on DaVinci V12, this only started at V14 beta

Right now working in 4K and DNG files

What about upgrading the processor on my mac to

Two x 3.33GHz Quad-Core 'Nehalem' (Intel X5590,8-Cores,QPI: 6.4GT/s)

With the Sapphire HD 7950

Or what would you recommend for a powerful upgrade?

On the same vintage machine, with much less RAM and lesser GPU than your system, and while the beta 7 experience perhaps isn't as optimised as beta 6 in certain respects, the Resolve 14 betas are definitely usable and not "ridiculously slow" by any means.

Even on larger sessions, Resolve barely hits 50% CPU usage (even during rendering) and hardly requires more than 5GB of RAM. Granted 4K footage with 80+ audio tracks is a step too far for this test system, but with optimised media my experience of beta 7 is very different to yours.

Same Here! I"m having horrible problems with H264 and using "selection follows playhead". The function is worthless as the playback looses frames while trying to select the clips bellow. Also, wheen using any ripple tool in a long sequence (1 hour long) you will notice a small delay to peform the action in the beguining of the sequence (if auto save is on, it takes almost a second). These problems make editing on Resolve almost impossible for me.

After playing with it for hours, I had found the problem! Since I had another graphics card in the computer it defaulted to the NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 which is an old junked card!

I found I had to manually adjust the settings in DaVinci in the setup (Not explained anywhere) to use the proper video card, AMD Radeon HD7950 Sapphire Mac Edition.

Now she's running smoothly, no glitches!

For early 2009 computer, this thing still screams!

Unfortunately you didnt indicate the GT120 in your first post.

The configuration guide on the BMD support web site does explain GPU configuration and use for the other gentleman with the speed issue. You may also have a config issue as the performance is now far from slow on reasonable hardware.

Beta 8 is now also a little faster again,
