MultiCam Performance Issue

PostThu Apr 26, 2018 4:53 am

I can't seem to find a codec that plays correctly when in multicam mode. I even went so far as using the "Mobile Device 1080 HD" MP4 codec in AME. Still can't get it to play right. That's a 6mbps bitrate. I've got the files on a 960 Evo NVM drive. The 2 hour videos are a mere 6GB a piece.

It runs between 45-50 frames per second. I suppose I'll try a 30fps transcode and see what happens.

v15?

Please try making DNxHD clips to test a single clip playback performance then multicam and report.

DNxHD 440 1080P - single playback buttery smooth. But then so was Cineform...well after the first couple hiccups anyway.

The multicam was a disaster. DR crashed upon creation of the MC clip at various phases. It wouldn't sync by sound at all. The timecodes were the same already so I switched to timecode, got the clip to create after a couple more crashes. Created the timeline and now can't play back anything. Doesn't even bring up a still in the source monitor. You can tell that the Angle windows are there. But no image. It won't play when launched from fairlight or color either.

Updated to b2. Multicam will play around 50fps.

Working on generating optimized media for the DNxHD clips to see if that makes a difference. Which 50 fps is about what the cineform did after generating optimized media. Set the resolution to 1/4.

Optimized Media did not help.

While generating the optimized media, I had plenty of resources left so I went ahead and pulled the DNx files into premiere, that had issues. But I surmise that was due to the optimization process accessing the same files.

Still while generating the optimized media, I pulled the cineform clips in to premiere. Buttery smooth at whatever defaults are for premiere. I haven't really done a lot with premiere, just enough to realize it's low res waveform images weren't going to cut it for camera sync and moved on to Resolve. But now that I am down to just two clips that are timecode synced, I suppose I could just go ahead and finish in Premiere. I would however like to keep testing Resolve, as I really do like it better as far as usability goes. That is except that pesky lack of the real time ability of reducing playback resolution like in Premiere and Vegas.

Didn't want to open a new thread, so I use this one:
I have multicam performance problems, too.
Three streams Prores 422, 25 fps, with no effects or grading added yet, even in proxy quarter mode, are quite choppy.
Same setup worked totally smooth in v14.

Short specs: Win10, Ryzen 5 1600, GTX 980 ti, 32 GB, v15.0.0B.037 studio, video on 2 drives combined as one (stripeset?), audio on a different drive

Update: Just found out that the problem seems to be the Intensity Pro, which I forgot to mention in the last post.
When I choose "none" for video I/O in the prefs, everything runs smooth, when the intensity is selected for I/O, then I get the stuttering playback.
Latest drivers (10.9.2) are installed.

Any ideas?

Do you mean Desktop Video 10.9.12 Thomas? If not, could you try with 10.9.12 from https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/suppor ... d-playback ?

Sorry, actually a typo. I meant 10.9.12. It's installed since it was available.

I can also confirm that my multicam project works at least as well as it does in premiere. However the update broke the audio amongst other things mentioned in another thread.

B6 Update now that I finally had time to do a deep clean to get my audio back -
FPS - runs about 55, which you would think would look nearly flawless, but it doesn't My guess is the sensor is off.

Audio - the pitch changes actually quite drastically for only about 4 frames (of 59.94) missing per second.

Premiere with the current decklink drivers 10.11, plays audio flawless (to my ears) albeit through Behringer UMC204HD and plays video at about what I'd expect 55 fps to look like.

I actually got audio back prior to doing a extreme deep clean and was back at 6.5 fps which lead to the extreme deep clean. The Resolve installer/uninstaller needs substantial improvement when it comes to cleaning up the registry and folders. It should wipe everything out (or at least offer the option to) except whatever Key/files need to be kept to keep the license intact.

We have a similar issue to what Thomas was describing. We get acceptable (not perfect) performance in MultiCam mode when the external SDI i/o is turned off, but as soon as we enable the SDI output, playback stutters.

We have tried the same project and media with both a MacPro tower 12-Core 64GB RAM, Nvidia TitanX Card w/ Decklink 4K card, and a Mac Pro trash can Dual D700s with a thunderbolt expansion chases and a Decklink Quad card.

Both machines running Resolve 15.2.1 on High Sierra. Desktop videos 10.11.4

Media is on a G-Tech G-Rack NAS, connected via 10Gb Ethernet. Original footage was 108029.97P ProRes HQ. Also tried with optimized media at 1/2 Res ProRes Proxy. Same result. Experimenting with Playback Proxy 1/2 and 1/4 res had no impact (other than of course reducing the resolution).
