How to Bypass Re-encode

PostWed Jun 12, 2019 7:48 pm

My experiences with 16 beta 2 nd 4 free versions have been excellent so far. I am wondering though how I can put GH5 clips on the timeline trim and then output the uncorrected clips (and no transitions) as one clip without any re-encoding. I see that there is a box under advanced options in the Deliver page that I can tick (Bypass re-encode when possible), but the clip still seem to be re-encoded . The clips are MP4 with PCM audio and I can specify that for the output but I still need to specify quality. Am I misunderstanding something here?

Bypass will depend on the format. Some will work, other won't. I'm not sure if GH5 clip can be bypassed. Probably not.
ProRes works as long as you choose same type- this is what I have tested so far.

Thanks Andrew. Good to know. I wonder if the fact that the user is allowed to specify the quality is a clue that the output will be re-encoded. When no re-encode works is the quality option greyed out?

Since you're not only "allowed" but are evidently required to specify a data rate, it's hard to see how this option could work. Maybe someone on the staff can clarify.

You *may* be able to trim GH5 files without recompression using Media Manager. The ability to do so for (some?) h.264 files was added in 15, but they didn't specify by camera.

Thanks John but with the GH5 you can smart trim in Camera and in the Photofunstudio supplied software - both very quick. It would be nice to use Resolve 16 to dump clips in a timeline, trim and combine them in the cut page and then output with no re-encode. Apparently that's not possible though - but that's looking a gift horse in the teeth.

Trimming clips as you propose should be possible with Media Manager, using an existing timeline. Consult the manual....

With Media Management, trims on long GOP clips will only happen on keyframes, so the trimmed media might contain more frames than you expect.
