+1 to an option in preferences to toggle between old (direct TC entry) and current (shortcut first, then type TC) behaviours

If the new behavior is somehow needed for the Speed Editor (still a bad design, in my view), then maybe the new behavior could be set to engage only when the Speed Editor is connected.

+1 on this.
Can I ask: what exactly is the function in keyboard customization that people are mapping "enter" or "*" to to enable timecode entry?

It's called Go To>Timecode. Search 'time' and it'll show up.

On an extended keyboard. * for entry, +/- for respective entries. Then enter.

I just want to add that no button on the numeric keypad activates the timecode entry for me.

The manual PDF doesn't mention a keyboard shortcut to activate the TC entry field.

Since I'm new to Resolve, I'd be happy with any of the numeric keys, Command-something, or just direct number entry on the keypad.

System specs are in my signature.

BMD have definitely changed how this works. I used to use the "*" to activate the timecode entry and now that doesn't work any more. You actually have to be on the active record monitor to activate the timecode entry box. Slows me down.

I'd take any shortcut that would allow me to navigate timecode while working in my timeline.

I have my Numpad asterisk shortcut working here in Studio 17.5.5 for Windows.

But there are still some very frustrating issues with timecode navigation to be sure.

Re: Timecode Entry

I am always looking to reduce the number of clicks or presses to achieve something. Direct timecode entry is preferred. There may be some other benefit I haven't yet encountered to having the TC entry triggered by a key. Pressing = first would then be consistent with +- keys before modification of TC values. However, having worked with Sony BVE-9100 and Grass Valley VPE something in the '90s, TCs could be typed (or picked up) and then used with modifiers, so you start with a TC and then decide what to do with it – very flexible.

On another point, if you have a timecode entry box that can be activated, then all timecode boxes should have the same functionality. DR18 has the TC box in the upper-right of the viewer, but I think the TC box on the timeline is more logical as it is closer to the timeline and is bigger, but isn't active. Consistency is important as it reduces cognitive load.

Lastly, Resolve was a color grading tool, now it is so much more. The key to success is making alternative platforms irrelevant. There is a lot of code in these programs.

Thanks for getting these tools to where they are today.

Version 18 was just released. Not all Feature Requests can be done at once, and this one didn't make the cut.

So here it is for continued voting.

Re: Timecode Entry

There are no programmed keyboard commands that allow me to select for Timecode entry. "=" does nothing. Attempting to customize my keyboard failed. I could not find the appropriate entry to map to. Perhaps I was tired. Perhaps "they" don't want anyone to have what has been usefully used by all editors, on all edit systems, for all of time. I'm sure Alexander had this function in his day, cranking out propaganda videos of his extraordinary vacation around the known world.

Requests have been made for simple TC entry...the return to a round wheel. In my system, not only has the wheel been irrevocably transmogrified, the square, stone wheel they put in its place (i.e. shortcut key) has been ground into powered obliteration. The only way to trigger the Timecode Entry function is to reach for the mouse, slide across 50" of screen to click in that one window upper right for the convenience of precisely moving my frakking clips...without having to use the mouse! Logically illogical.

But hey, they got rid of the need to type "=."

It's sad living in a world wherein improvement has been redefined as the return of-or-to basic function. But Blackmagic's Resolve to invest time and effort in a direction fully retrograde reminds me how one regressive act can effectively negate the benefit derived, and appreciation of, 10 acts of inspired programming.

Every dang time I have to reach for that pointing device, I am reminded. That's a lot of time spent feeling that moment of frustration, of disconnection, of disruption. It's hard to be Jedi when someone's constantly throwing Sith sabres at your feet.

ahem...+1 please

You say the = doesn't work for you? I was going to guess then that your keyboard focus isn't in the viewer or timeline.

But then I tried it and found that they do work just fine for me regardless of what panel in the Edit page has focus. Good job guys!

So I'm not sure why it's not working for you. It's too bad that only the viewer is where it shows up - not the timeline's tc display - but it does seem to work.

As others have said, at least have the option to swap to the industry standard keypad entry without requiring the shortcut key first.

One extra key might not seem like a lot, but it really does slow down TC entry an awful lot, and I know a lot of editors coming from other software that are driven nuts by this.
