Clip duration

PostSun Aug 18, 2019 9:57 am

It would be useful to be able to see the clip duration, as TC, for the clips in the timeline. Like an option that displays the duration for each clip beside the name in the timeline view, maybe. Or as it was suggested in another forum as an option with the other timecode in the viewer (maybe a selectable option instead of/ or in addition to the total duration TC of the timeline that is currently displayed above the viewer). Or even better both.

Maybe eventually the "boring" tool could evolve into a graphical representation of the timelime clip durations distribution and overall "rhythms" of the cut. (Like a distribution of duration and number of clips) or a color coded version of the timeline where we could see clips grouped according to specific duration presets) That could be useful, maybe.

But for the time being I would be happy with some type of indication of the selected clip duration. I know I can see the duration when trimming and that is what I frequently use. But you have to click and hold the mouse and often you make involuntary changes. Also It is useful to see clip durations update live side by side while trimming. This could be achieved with a live update of the TC duration on the clips in the timeline (beside the name of the clip) so when I drag a clip over another one I would know exactly how much I am shortening it, etc.

I disagree. In my practice I have never met such a requirement. Sometimes it is necessary to determine the duration of a clip in the timeline and you need to be able to change the duration by entering a specific time, but DaVinci can do that. Permanently displaying the duration of clips is nonsense.

In the Edit Index, record in and out times for cut clips in timeline is displayed. So it would be a simple subtraction that could be another column in the EI (record duration?)

It would be helpful for multicam clips (manual editing) to match the end point of a cut clip in the timeline to another clip in the viewer.

Currently, I have to... 8:25 minus 6:46 equals something. 1:36 (preview) plus something equals the same record out of the two clips.

I think 99 seconds, i.e. 1:39. So... 1:39 plus 1:36 is hmm... 3:15! So the out point is 3:15, I think

Turned out to be 3:18, close enough!

I'm getting better at doing it in my head :D

As a professional TV editor, this is something I use ALL THE TIME. There are so many reasons an editor would need to clearly see the exact length of a clip on the timeline. Please add this feature.

+1 for this feature

I had a bunch of stills in the timeline and wanted to check to see they were all exactly 1 and a half seconds each, unless im missing something, I can't see a way to display the duration of the clip (on the clip itself) in the timeline.

For those who say they have never had the need for a feature like this, what can I say...... you might need it one day (?)

You can select/deselect what info is displayed in Avid - so it wouldnt need to be permanent.
Check out all the options Avid has for clips in the timeline....

When a clip is selected in the timeline, the clip length is not known.
The clip length in the source viewer can be seen when you double-click the clip in the timeline to send it to the source viewer, but not when you simply select it in the timeline.
Even when more than one clip is selected, the length of the selected clips is not known.
Viewing clip information such as clip length in real time is very important for accurate editing.
If you can always check the duration of a clip(s) without sending the clip to the source viewer or trimming the clip from the timeline, I think it will be very helpful for accurate editing.

Avid has done it right. If someone wants, they can monitor the duration of the clip permanently, but this does not interfere with others who use the function only in specific cases. (in these situations, the options that the current DaVinci already has are basically enough)

I am not against DaVinci expanding its capabilities. But I set out against the fact that every editor needs to monitor the duration of the clip constantly. I started on TV (and sometimes I make something there), I know what the editor's job is there.

I would also welcome the opportunity to turn off all info in the clip. Sometimes information interferes there.

Before all the obligatory "Resolve is different—maybe learn to deal with it's quirks" responses come in. I'm a Premiere editor, and while I certainly enjoy this software, the biggest draw for Premiere users would be to have all the useful features from that software, and more.

Hovering the mouse cursor over a clip in the timeline should show a pop-up box that shows clip duration—Just like in Premiere.

+1 with this...

Premiere also has dedicated INFO TAB where you can see a duration of a clip in realtime & other useful info.
Vegas Pro also have this in the clip itself as as an option and Vegas also has an extension to display window with clip's current duration.
So please devs consider this also.

In fact, perhaps you want to take inspiration on Flame's hotkey to bring all the clip information directly at your mouse position as a pop-up window?

Really really useful.

Coming from Premiere, Liquid, Avid as from 1999, this was always the case.
You can't work efficiency if you don't know clip's duration(s).
Editing as directing is based on time control.
I am really impressed that DR with such great innovations, doesn't have a base one.
Let's have it please.

I AGREE!!

I am a professional editor who mostly works in Avid for my professional jobs. This is one of a couple features that Avid offers that I wish DaVinci would as well (I'll be requesting the others in the appropriate threads).

Knowing (and seeing) the clip durations in the timeline is a needed feature - please allow users to choose what information is written on the clips in the timeline.

I just spent minutes looking for this, more time wasted in something very basic that for some reason isn't easily found without having to dig for it.

Like "camera FPS" - I can't sort by the frame rate I shot at (for slow mo) as it's not an option for the columns - only visible on a tertiary metadata page. I have to bring clips into Premiere to readily sort them. :(

7 years later and still don't have this functionality in the timeline, meaning, having the duration displayed on a per clip bases, always on... as much as I love Resolve, these little things add up and this one is more important than many people may think at first.

Turn it on/off via a preference but please let's have this working on the next release.
