Smart bins on Cut page

PostThu Feb 06, 2020 8:36 pm

Not having the Smart Bins available on the Cut Page makes no sense to me and makes the Cut Page almost useless to me. I'd like to see Blackmagic add the ability to access my Smart Bins from the Cut Page.

In searching this forum I've seen many posts also looking for Smart Bin accessibility on the Cut page - the replies to those posts are rarely positive and mostly trolling and ridicule, I don't understand why the question is causing backlash from other forum users. (I do realize this statement will almost certainly generate more of that cruft, but for Blackmagic, I hope you take my suggestion seriously.)

Sure, but in the meanwhile....

You can make a smart bin into a floating window and it will stay open and accessible in the cut page.

That's brilliant! Works great especially as I have multiple monitors.

Thank you so much for the suggestion!

I would find this useful as well. Not having access to my organized media is a big part of why I can't even try the Cut page for my projects.

That does work, but unfortunately the source tape feature ignores smart bins. It would be great if that it would be populated just from the smart bin that is selected.

I found a pretty easy workaround. In my case, smart bins are dated, so I can see the time progression of clips. I just created identically named bins under master. Then easily dragged the content of each smart bin to its matching master bin. Now all smart bin content is accessible from the cut page.

Its not perfect, but now I'm using the cut page as I had hoped.

It's not a perfect solution, but there's one way. You can do this by clicking in the Media tap click at'Open as new window'.
I hope this becomes possible within a full UI. BIN accessibility of CUT PAGE and consistency with EDIT PAGE are insufficient.

WHUT!? I was just searching this forum for how to access my Smart Bins from within the Cut Page - it didn't even occur to me that wouldn't be possible (without having to create floaty windows or duplicating bins and copying the smart bins contents across). :o

I'm new to Resolve and I do really love it, but I'm not a fan of software that forces you to having to know about its underlaying architecture. At the end of the day if I've organised my media in Smart Bins then they should just be 'there' available for me. I couldn't care less if the media I want is in a smart bin, normal bin, or tutankhamon's tomb...just be there.

BMD can't do everything we want in the "next version", so I wanted to bump this idea, which didn't make the cut for 17.

One more vote for using smart bins in cut page. I work on long-form docs for TV, and use smart bins to organise the footage in multiple ways. Being able to use the speed editor to scroll through a smart bin as a source tape would be a fantastic time-saver.

Also i am really missing to be able to sort by keywords!

Better start fusioning Edit Page with Cut Page, the only key factor is timeline, so let us alternate between one timeline mode and the other.

I never never use Cut Page after so many attemps, as i feel too limited there , and fundamental elements like keyframing, speed, clip markers that may arise during cutting process forces us to go to Edit Page all the time and stay away from Cut Page. At that point also Speed Editor gets a waste of keys assigned to Cam1-9, but still missing fundamental elements of edition (like Go to In marker).

Cut Page + Speed Edit, in my humble experience and opinion are "alpha version" elements in terms of UX, to stay away from them if you take edition seriously.

How to do this? I only have one monitor (49inch), so Davinci doesn't allow dual screen. Do I need this to make a floating window? Just can't find how to do this.

Right click on any media bin and choose "open in new window." Click on whatever bins (smart or otherwise) you want to look at.

Then arrange the main page ("cut" page in your case) so it takes up a portion of your single monitor and the floating window takes up some part of the rest.

I typically use this setup for metadata entry when using the media page, so set that to take up half the monitor, with the floating window taking up the other half. The metadata entry panel then is nicely placed in the middle of the screen where it is easy to work with.

Ah I was a little confused by the earlier instructions. On the Smart bins I don't have anything when right clicking. But I discovered that when I right click the Master bin, I do have the "open in new window" option and in that Window I can open the Smart Bins again :-)

Been searching for an hour on how to open the smart bin in a new window, but should have opened any other bin in a new window.

Thank you!

One more vote for this feature. As many others have said, if you use Smartbins the Cut Page along with the Speed Editor aren't very useful. This would save a ton of time sorting through footage and organizing it into my timelines.

+1 For me the most important thing is the possibility of use Smart Bins, Keywords and Tape mode at the same time. That way I can organize my footage in many different ways and use a easy way to edit B-roll footage.
I don't care if I can access to Smart Bins front Cut page or include Tape mode in the Edit page (maybe this option is better).

+1 absolutely.

It's such a bummer there's no way to use the keywords/Smart bins in the Cut Page.
Especially when you want to work with the 'SOURCE' button and scroll with your Speed Editor through a selection of keyword'ed Clips.
Working on a long documentary and it would be such a relief having that kind of fast access, as I organized everything with Keywords. :|

Smart Bins in Cut Page

PostSun Apr 23, 2023 5:01 am

Hi, my majority consists of feature films where before editing starts we log metadata to all the clips, including scene no, take no, shot no. ..etc. We then create smart Bins for each scene number. The initial process in editing starts with viewing all the clips shot for a particular scene and marking it for use. The cut page is very handy in that where we could see all the clips in a traditional tape manner. But the problem is there is no way we could use smart Bins in the cut page. Our main folder structure will be based on the camera and card numbers. But this folder structure is very much unusable in cut page. So I kindly request the blackmagic design team to consider this feature for davinci resolve in upcoming updates.
Thankyou
