Safe area.......

PostTue Nov 28, 2023 4:05 am

currently, safe area is restricted to very few choices - hard coded are basically 1.33 / 1.66 / 1.77 / 1.85 / 2.35

That does not cover (for example) the standard 2.39 theatrical, that is THE standard since 2006. In the cut page is even more funny, you can ask for "action" and "title" lines, but those are locked to 1.77 (in my screen.....)

there are multiple shows that I'm finishing for Netflix and other that use 2.0:1 AR ad it is impossible to have a proper title check on it. (short of 30k panel)

in the EDIT page, the safe area is ON in the GUI, but not in the main screen, so the client cannot see when you do titles or subtitles where they are in relationship with the safe area...

Yes, you can choose a custom value if you have the 30.000$ panel, but that cannot be an answer, especially because the editor that place titles simply does not have the panel, and frankly millions of user don't have the panel.

so, eliminate the choices altogether (or keep the basic ones if you really want to) but give a "custom" option where we insert two integer numbers, in that way we can insert [2 : 1] or [2048 : 858] and line up by the pixel where the lines should be.

this "problem" was mentioned before few times and personally I think should be addressed: having a top client in the room with an editor and have the "I'm sorry I cannot show you the action/title lines because you choose a 2.39 aspect ratio in 2023 (and even if i have it, it will not show up in the screen anyway)" is a downer....

I've never used it, but there is an option under Preferences>User>Editing>General Settings to allow for Custom safe area.

Does that work?

I think that's a very reasonable request. +1

Yes would love this feature added! I want to Edit 16:9 footage and quickly see how 9:16 will look, Any other workarounds to do this?

It looks like you did not understand the request, [custom safe areas] only refer to the percentage of “safe area’ and “title safe area” of the already selected general blanking, but it cannot change the aspect ratio of the blanking itself, nor set a custom aspect ratio that is smaller than the screen (imagine a full image with a Picture in Picture that has to fit exactly in the center of the screen for whatever reason.). Nor you can have two safe areas at the same times, like 2.39 and the 1.78 extraction within that.

Immagine that you have to work with Christopher Nolan and you have a 65mm 5perf image and that helps an aspect ratio of 2.20/1, you cannot simply set it up unless you have a 30.000$ panel and that is frankly ridiculous.

This is one of the few features that i really miss form the old Quantel days.

it looks like something is happening in 19b2

• Support for safe area overlay options in the edit timeline viewer.
• If selected, safe area overlays are displayed in the cut and edit viewers during playback.

can someone check what it is?

This is definitely a thing now. There are a couple of presets for Social Media stuff, safe action, title safe and center all available via a quick menu button at the top of the viewer.

can you define an arbitrary safe are aspect like 2:20/1?

Not that I know of, but most things in Resolve involve a settings file of some sorts somewhere (like macros and effects for the Edit page) so maybe it can be accessed somewhere, but I don't know how.
I hope it will be documented by the time of release if it can be done.

Here is a screenshot of the safe area controls in Edit page of Resolve Studio v19 Beta 2. You can have multiple of them enabled at the same time.

thanks the issue (as it has been for half a century) is that you cannot have an aspect ratio that is not any of the hard coded presets, like 2.00/1 and you don't even have the actual DCI standard 2.387:1 (the actual numbers from 2048x858): 2.35 is not good enough when you are actually trying to line up subtitles for the big screen.

as mentioned before you "can" change the aspect ratio with a 30.000$ panel, but that is somewhat useless because the editor that does the job most likely will work in a room with no such panel.
And as soon as you restart teh software, that value is lost...

We really need the ability to add custom ones. 2:39 is still missing. 2:20 is missing. 1:43 is missing. There is no Rule of Thirds one.

You should be able to enable them in Color as well.
