Ducker on edit page

PostSun Apr 14, 2024 1:11 pm

The ducker on the edit page is fairly limited:

1. Listens only to one audio track. I almost all the time have multiple dialog tracks.
2. No gain control: when does the ducker kick in, based on the level in the source track
3. Would be nice if it would be applicable on clip level

Thats strange, because in this document:
https://documents.blackmagicdesign.com/ ... _Guide.pdf
they said:
Choose the Duck Source track or bus in the drop-down menu.

But indeed I can't select Bus. Maybe something we doing wrong?

Also this is wrong, that I can select audio track 3 to duck audio track 3 ;)

IMO the benefit of the Ducker is that you can apply it on the edit page. However it should be improved. When working in Fairlight I can still use the side chaining with full functionality.

I didn't see a bus available, either (on the Fairlight page). Not that familiar with the new features so easily could be user error, I suppose.

I've tested the new ducker and I fully agree. This is a welcomed addition, but currently it is so limited, I will still stick to sidechaining the background music and voice in Fairlight using the Compressor.

In addition to what it's listed above, I personally find that the max "Recovery value" of 1000 ms is too short and to my ears I could not get the same good results I get when I properly set the Release value on the Compressor; yes it depends also on the speed of VO and the music type, but I usually like to get very smooth music "fade in back", which I cannot get with the ducker (the Hold value does not help and don't work well enough in my test).

Since everything is still in beta, I'm sure many improvements will come, but at today using a Sidechain is still the way to go for me.

Agreed on recovery limit of 1000 ms being too short.

I'm missing a setting for the attack time of the ducker. The Look ahead is great, but the music instantly kicks down to the lower volume, no way to let it fade down the way you let it fade up with the recovery. It would be awesome to have it gently fade down and back up with some room before and after the voice. So in that regard +1 for the wish for longer fade times then 1000ms too. Otherwise I agree one could still just use the fairlight ducking feature. The look ahead got me curious, but right now I don't see much use for the ducker in its current state.
