Resolve 19b Unable to view/playback GoPro footage

PostSun Apr 14, 2024 7:33 pm

(moved from general Resolve forum)

Just upgraded to Resolve 19 beta. Ive opened and upgraded a couple of projects now, and in my 2nd project, all the GoPro footage (H264 1080p 30fps) is coming up black. Other camera footage (DJI, BMPCC4K, Panasonic) is fine. Resolve can see the footage, I see the in/out marks on the media page clip playback as well as the clips on the edit page, but the clips are all black - both in media page playback and in edit page playback / timeline thumbnails.

I will add that VLC and Windows Media player can playback the clips just fine.

Are you sure you didn't update to DR19 FREE vs Studio? Lot of GoPro footage is 10bit and requires studio. Also make sure you have the HEVC codec installed... I just checked some10 bit GP footage in DR19 studio and its fine. If its an old project maybe delete render cache and rebuild.

I can view files like that just fine.
How about my sample at https://drive.google.com/file/d/1eh-SOf ... drive_link ? (very exciting video of my wall, sorry)

All good ideas - I checked I have the studio version, and your footage is visible and plays back just fine. Its just my GoPro footage but seemingly from one specific GoPro. According to VLC codec info:

1920x1440
Codec: H264 MPEG4 AVC (part 10) (avc1)
Frame Rate: 30
Color primaries ITU-R BT.601 (525 lines 60Hz)
Color transfer func: ITU-R BT.709
Color Space: ITU-R BT.601 Range
Chrome location: left

Your provided sample is:
1920x1080 (this is diff)
Frame Rae: 29.970029 (which is simimlar to other GoPro footage of mine that playsback just fine)
Your color primaries/range stuff is .709 vs 601

Okay, that means that it's a setting on that gopro :)

Next: Can we get a sample file?
If not, can you paste what mediainfo https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo writes instead of what VLC writes?
(Also, if you get Rec.601 from my file we have major issues, cause it's a Rec.709)

Variable frame rate is bad.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Thank you for the extremely helpful comment (very sarcastic).

Nick: I don't see anything in that list that would explain you not being able to see the video in DR.
So the usual two options remain: Recode or rewrap.
The third option is to share the file (possibly just to me) to confirm it's a Davinci issue and not a specific problem with the current installation.

The files are what they are - they worked with Resolve versions from July 2019 on so Im not sure whats changed here. Windows 10 and 11 can play them without any issues - both in VLC and Windows movie player. Ive got about 40 clips from this camera recorded the same way that latest Resolve wont read. Ive got thousands of other GoPro clips that can be read just fine though - I checked a bunch more of my older projects last night and they all upgraded with 19b without issue.

I don't know - variable frame rate IS bad (in the context of Resolve). Another way to express this is that Resolve does not work well with variable frame rate footage. However, I don't recall earlier versions of Resolve not being able to play variable rate footage - it's just that it didn't play it well and often had sync issues, etc. Maybe something changed in Resolve 19 - could even be a bug.

BMD will need a sample of that footage to evaluate this.

Also footage doesn't come out of of GOPRO's with variable frame rate. This is not an original camera file. So we're not really evaluating if Resolve 19 works with GoPro footage, we're talking about some conversion either from Gopro software or something else.

Media Info says for your file under #Other 3 -> Title: GoPro SOS

Which might point to a problematic file - like the camera couldn’t finalize the file due to a low battery or memory card error.

Maybe Resolve 19 got less tolerant with problematic files - but that is just a guess.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Triple Checked I'm running "Studio 19"

These GoPro files worked fine with earlier versions so this is a definite regression - this project was edited and delivered with the files as is (they're stored on a read-only NAS share) on a prior Resolve Studio version so I know they work.

Ill make a new project and see if I can import them, but Im not confident since the clips in the Media Page dont play either, but maybe its some weird interaction between the clips and the upgraded project.

Interesting idea - Ill take a look. However this folder contains upwards of 50 clips from the same GoPro camera - they cant all have been recorded at a low battery state. I guess Im going to have to Handbrake them all.

I have not - I ran all clips through handbrake and recoded them. Every other application Ive used to view these clips handled the original just fine - VLC, Windows Media Player, Mac Quicktime, online media player streamed to a chromecast etc. No issues whatsoever. There's clearly something different with Resolve here.

30.000fps is an odd frame rate for go pro. just as a quick test, try setting frame rate via clip props to 29.97 and see if it magically works. otherwise yes its a bug and the devs will likely contact you offline for the clip to see what's going on.

Yes: Resolve is different, it's a NLE, not a player. Did you try any other?

Could still be your hardware. If you post a clip to a cloud service, I can try on mine.

Im assuming you meant right click --> Click Attributes? If so, that didnt do anything - still black clips. Correct length, and all file metadata seems sane, but entirely black in the viewer and no audio

Also, the handbraked copies are all set to 30fps as well and they render/edit just fine.

yes. not sure why you are using handbrake but its the problem in making something not quite right in the media files to choke R. the wrong frame rate is one hint. I'd use Gopro app, Compressor, or Adobe media encoder instead, or just let Resolve create its own full res optimized media.

If you can't provide a sample, and there is a Resolve 19 issue, it will be hard to address.

Yes I'm sure its a GoPro - I have the reverse angle on another camera (I just checked). I don't know the model - these clips were provided to me for inclusion in the edit. I do know they were recorded in August 2019 and likely a current model from the time period.

Fully understood - but trying to create a small shareable clip outside of Resolve ends up making the footage readable since the clip gets re-rendered. I just tried in FCP on my MacbookPro - it reads all the files just fine and I can render out. Resolve can then read this new clip just fine - the same way it can read all the re-encoded files that I processed through Handbrake.

I dont think I can simply binary split the video clips and expect them to work.

Can I enable logs in Resolve or see Resolve's file processing for the clips I have?

Are those clips so huge that you can't put one on a cloud service and post the link?
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

You can take a part of an H.264 file without re-encoding. Since your video is a long GOP encoding the accuracy of the timing is the nearest keyframe.

For instance:

ffmpeg -i video.mp4 -ss 00:00:00 -to 00:1:00 -c copy first1.mp4

Don't do that. Share the unaltered original from the media card.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

You can upload your sample here to my account - file size is unlimited:
https://laufbildkommission.wetransfer.com

I can then put up a link for everyone to download.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.
