4k Live Streaming

PostThu Apr 27, 2017 4:51 pm

I currently use the Ultrastudio Mini Recorder to get my 1080 feed from my Sony A7RII so I can use that camera for my Live Feed. Im wanting to move my game up to 4k live feed. I am only using one camera for now. What device do you have that will allow me to do Live Feed in 4k. If I can even get 2K I'd be happy. I just want better quality than 1080 HD. I use Wirecast for my streaming software. Looking to try the OBS Studio software.

Im hoping for some good news.

Pete :)

There are many Decklink cards that support 4K inputs. Mini Recorder 4K is the cheapest that should work with your camera in 2160p30.

Need a non-card version. I was wondering if the Blackmagic Video Assist would also work? The 4k version. I use a MacBook Pro so plug in cards just won't do. Need a portable solution. Or at least a semi portable solution. I will be in the garage and garden with my streaming.

I assume it would work with with an external PCIe enclosure connected by Thunderbolt. UltraStudio 4K is $1000 and not exactly portable.

A Video Assist is a stand alone monitor/recorder, it does not stream to a computer via USB or Thunderbolt.
The Web Presenter will stream a hdmi or SDI signal to USB which looks like a 720p Web Cam to the computer streaming applications, but it is not 4K output either, just 720p to a variable frame rate adjusted to meet the streaming bandwidth.

Like Jack said, ultrastudio 4k will do it over thunderbolt. It's a 1U device. Watch BH used or Ebay and you can probably grab one for $500-$600. (The older thunderbolt 2 version)

Teradek will be coming out with a HEVC 4k Encoder soon.

Nobody can watch a 4k stream anyway. 4k live streaming is completely pointless, you need 4x the bandwidth of HD to maintain the same quality on a stream that nobody can actually look at.

Come back in 10 years time.

YouTube can already deliver 4K live. HEVC will make 4K easily possible. Anybody with a cable connection will easily be able to watch 4K as the end points get closer to the user.

Except that almost nobody has a 4k screen to see it on.

I'd be interested to see what the CPU utilization is when running Wirecast streaming at 15-25MBPS at 4K. Have you taken into account that many will not be able to watch 4K? What about mobile users? Do they watch your stream? If so, what impact will that have on their data plan?

Best,

David

Regarding the TV screen, I know 10 people with 4K TV

Regarding 4K on Mobile; it's not a thing yet. Services like YouTube and Wowza will transcode the video for you and properly present it to the users for the best experience.

Obviously 4K is not the norm, but there are certain advantages to being first to market

You can already stream 2160p from an iPad live with the Teradek Sphere using AVC, no reason why this can't be pushed forward for computers and dedicated encoders
