Prores capture codec alternative for Windows Media Express

PostSun Sep 24, 2017 12:21 am

On windows, all my options seem to be uncompressed formats only and produce large video files. I know there is no prores capture codec for windows, so what alternative should I use and where can I download it?

It is pretty bleak, there is a photo jpeg option. I am waiting on a lot of counts and for other software for a feasible AVI based codec ala prores. So far there are no real options, let alone support for real time encoding as needed for capture. A bit off topic but this codec actually looks pretty promising

So in summary, apart from the photojpeg its uncompressed.

True, but with the limitation of SDI only. It would be great to see some more codecs media express.

If you don't need RS-422 control you can use ffmepg for capturing and then you have access to many codecs, including ProRes.
Other way is to use one of the 3rd part capture tools which work with BM card. For PC you have eg. Metus which even has Apple certified ProRes. It's fairly pricy though.
Other option is MediaNXS which is more affordable.

Now that Adobe Premiere has native support for Prores encoding on Windows, will Blackmagic also add this to the Desktop Video software and Resolve on Windows? - Hopefully soon? :)
