Can't Load Intensity Pro Drivers on Win7 64 bit

PostWed Jul 17, 2013 3:01 am

Running Win7, 64 bit on a Dell 8550.

The Intensity Pro drivers don't load and windows reports

Device Cannot Start, Code 10

This same system has the ATEM TV Studio software installed. I'm able to use MediaExpress w/the ATEM TV studio but it only detects the ATEM TV studio and not the Intensity Pro (cause the drivers didn't load).

I tried uninstalling the ATEM TV Studio software and just installing the Desktop Video software, but the results were identical.

Any suggestions on how to debug why the drivers aren't loading?

Have you tried the card in a different slot? Is the card showing up in Device manager either as one 'unknown multimedia device' or as 3 BM devices under 'Sound video and game controllers'. If it doesn't show up under either then your card isn't being seen.
You might also want to say which 8550 you have as Dell have made a few different ones over the years

Sound video and game controllers

It is showing up there and that's where I was able to find out the driver reported Code 10. That being said, I haven't changed slots, I will do that tonight and report the results. Is it possible that it might be conflicting with another card?

You might also want to say which 8550

Bought it a few months ago, but I'll pop into the BIOS and report the revision also.

Changing to a different slot may help, although I have seen others having issues trying to use BM cards on Dell systems.
You don't need to look in the BIOS for the revision, just need the full model name

XPS 8500 (is this the info you're looking for)?

Well looking at pics of the inside it looks like it's a mATX board so I suspect it may well be the case that the board won't work. You could try the other slot though and see if it kicks in

I wish I had asked a few questions prior to purchasing it. Is there some restriction in mATX boards that create issues w/the Intensity Pro?

Depends on the board I suppose, although I have seen a few people on here who have issues with Dell systems in particular

Pulled out SoundBlaster PCIe card and tried a different slot. Interesting results:

1. First 4-5 boots, the device was detected. Got a popup that the Intensity Pro Firmware needed to be updated. That process lasted 30-60 seconds then failed on each boot cycle. At this point, I sealed up the case and thought I was home free...but not really.

2. Next boot, card wasn't recognized.

3. Disconnected everything, rebooted a bunch of times finally was recognized again after removing/inserting the card multiple times.

4. Connected HDMI cable after failed firmware update attempt and once again, card wasn't recognized.

I've noticed that the card tends not to be recognized if any of the following are true:

1. SoundBlaster PCIe card is connected
2. HDMI cable connected at boot
3. Firmware download fails for a few boot cycles

None of these reasons are repeatable, but it happened enough times for me to begin to wonder if there's a pattern there.

On a couple failed boot cycles, the device doesn't show under Sound Controllers area, but most times it is there with a failure code. When the driver loads cleanly, the WDM Black Magic driver is present. When it fails, the WDM driver isn't there.

When the SoundBlaster PCIe card isn't there and it fails to load, I see one of two errors:

12 : Not Enough Free Resources
43 :

On the last cycle when the driver loaded properly, I fired up MediaExpress, tried to do a capture but there was only a black screen (even though MediaExpress detected the Intensity Pro device).

I was going to try another machine but ran into a problem, that was running 32-bit Windows 7 which I don't believe is supported.

Couple additional questions:

1. Windows reports the drivers are at 9.7.6.0. How do I tell what revision of firmware I'm using?
2. I'm running w/the Intensity Pro driver software that comes the ATEM TV Studio installation. Could this be problematic? Tried the Desktop Video package last night but if I install that, I can't control the ATEM TV Studio.

Sounds to me like it's not compatible with your system, no real surprise after seeing others with Dell systems also having problems

I tried it in an HP and the card appears to work reliably (albeit with limited testing) so it appears as if the Intensity Pro hardware is fine...its definitely an interaction issue w/my Dell.
