Atem mini and fb live

PostMon Dec 02, 2019 4:06 pm

Hi,

Live production newbie!

A couple of quick questions I can't find answer for if that's possible please!

I've just got my item mini- the tech specs list only 1080p outputs- facebook live specs are listed as 720p max? How does that work? Does the OBS software down convert it or does Facebook do it?

What resolution should I render out text and graphics from After effects for playout through a hyper deck- 720p or 1080p (for facebook live)

Many thanks and apologies if these are really basic!

Just put the Atem in 720P mode. Plug the USB in to your computer and start up Facebook and go live. Dont need OBS. FB should be able to ingest the "webcam feed" from the atem direct. ;)

Yes .. OBS can downscale 1080p to 720p for U .. And I preffer OBS as an encoder , because it use X264 , whitch produce streams in best quality ..

You should be able to run the Switcher as 1080p directly into FBLive without any issue. This is more important if you want to record at 1080p (even if you are streaming at 720p).

One other note is that Facebook will handle a 1080p stream as input and will downconvert it to 720p for delivery to viewers. There's no real quality advantage to sending Facebook a 1080p stream and it will use more bandwidth than 720p, but there are still some reasons you might want to do this.

One is if you are doing local recording of a broadcast (for archiving or later editing). If all of your cameras and gear are 1080p, then you might want to run your switcher at that resolution so that the recordings are higher quality. And if you are streaming using OBS or other streaming software, this would allow you to do use a single output resolution (1080p) for both streaming and local recording. If you wanted a 1080p local archive while also streaming at 720p you would need to do multiple encodings which is significantly more resource intensive.

Another reason you might do this is if sending the same stream to multiple streaming platforms simultaneously, then you might want to send 1080p to the platforms that support it, in which case it's easier to send 1080p to all of them (to avoid the need for multiple encodes at different resolutions).

Also, Facebook has started to add 1080p streaming support to viewers as well, but it seems to be limited to gaming video streamers through their Level Up program for the time being:

And there are also reports that it is possible using a dedicated Wowza ClearCaster hardware encoder:

Im streaming to facebook 1-2 streams pre week .. Eveytime to accounts of my clients .. And I dont understand why some clients have max supported resolution 720p and other have 1080p .. We are working in 1080i (cameras are SONY EX350/400) , records are in prores 1080i .. And stream is going thru Teradec Cube encoder into 720p .. But i want to made smaller streaming box with ATEM mini and OBS as a streamer ..

Some more prominent pages are enabled for 1080p on Facebook. It's a limited rollout.

One note for 1080i - not all down converts are equal. You may see interlaced artifacts in high motion areas in lower quality progressive conversions.
