Shuttle or Pro

PostSat Jul 27, 2013 8:16 pm

Which will give the fastest data rates and I mean which is best for PS3 Live streaming ?

I assume the Pro will be faster because it goes straight to the motherboard via PCI-E cutting out the middleman "the shuttle".

They both use the same data rates so there's no difference there. The difference comes to compatibility with your system and output. Depending on your system you may have issues with the USB 3 shuttle as it is very hit and miss on what it works with, although if you have a Dell system you may also have issues with the Intensity Pro.
Also, the Shuttle is supposed to give 10 bit output whereas the Pro doesn't.

However the shuttle data rate is to the PCIe Card. My point, maybe you missed it, is that the Pro cuts out this "middleman", therefore it should be at least no slower and probably faster.

Data is Data. You'll get the same uncompressed video signal as a source to whatever software you use to do the encoding. As Adbear said... if you have a choice.. consider trying the Intensity Pro first as (barring motherboard issues) that may be an easier setup.

USB3 may have a (slightly) higher CPU load than PCI. Not sure if that is this "middle man" you keep referring to.

EDIT: Typo

There's still no difference between data rate, what I think you are referring to is latency. The differences are negligible, especially if you can use a built in USB controller rather than a 3rd party card, but even using a 3rd party card you won't notice any difference.

You seem to want to hear the answer you want to hear. So if it helps. Yes..it makes a huge difference to cut out the middle man. Absolutely gigantic difference.

By the way... What's the reason you want to hear that answer?

I'm sorry if it came over as an attack. Not my intention. You do seem to not want to hear what is being shared. I am curious why that is the case. Why is it so important to your use? An answer would be appropriate.

I also have an Intensity Pro and I use my 1ME via USB3 (like having a USB3 shuttle). Using either of them makes no appreciable difference to anything I am doing with the captured video. If I am encoding... such a delay means nothing to the remote audience. It means nothing to my use of the product.

If there is any delay by this "middle man" we are talking a factor of milliseconds.. at most maybe a frame or two delay from the live signal). What is your use case where such a time delay is an issue?

Note: if you are going to be live streaming... there will likely be a HUGE delay (at minimum several seconds) added on through any streaming service that you use. This again makes any "latency" difference in the source (USB3 Shuttle vs Intensity Pro) even less of an issue.

And... my choice would be Intensity Pro over the Shuttle if there is no other compelling reason for you to prefer the shuttle (portability / use with another laptop/desktop)

I'm glad you have given your experience using similar devices. thanks for your thoughts also.
I have chosen the internal card because of my initial thoughts but also the lack of knowledge of components. I feel the shuttle may or may not work with my system and I really prefer not to try it, have a failure, and attempt to send it back which may incur additional costs.

OK...I understand that (I'm of the same mind). But I am still rather bemused as to why you were pushing for this "middle man/delay" question? That doesn't appear to be a factor at all in what you just shared.

Well.. for me... you still have not explained yourself better. Do you need me to ask the question again that I asked about why you were concerned about the "delay"?

It's not critical I know.. especially if you have got the answer you were looking for and have made the decision on which product to go for. But... we were all trying our best to answer your concern (initially about "Fasted Data Rates" and later about "Delay')

You really are misunderstanding my commitment. I know it feels to you like this has degenerated in to squabbling. I can assure you I had a real purpose for trying to understand your concern for this "delay" and I am wondering why you don't want to answer me. But... that is OK.

I understand that your question has been answered.

I hope my responses were somewhat helpful at least (in the end).

I know there's no difference on data rate due to the fact that USB 3 is faster than PCIe x1. The max data rate the Intensity pro can reach is approx 250MB/s which is the max data rate of PCIe x1 with no overheads. The max data rate of USB 3 is approx 625MB/s with no overheads, even if you split this between the 2 sockets you get for each controller it still works out faster per socket than PCIe x1. Also as has been said before the data rate of the video capture doesn't change. Video is Video, so whether you capture as uncompressed on the Pro or shuttle the data rate is still the same.
It's difficult to say what the latency is without having something to measure it accurately. Both PCIe and USB 3 have their own latencies, but having used both as well as the thunderbolt shuttle, there's no noticeable difference between them as it's not humanly possible to notice a difference which is way less than 1ms

Shuttle is cute too, handy and close by whiles Intensity Pro has cables popping out everywhere. Apart from Shuttles USB3 installation problems with some board it is better but I will vote for Intensity because of flexibility.
