Micro Studio Camera 4K - MFT Zoom lens

PostThu Apr 09, 2020 4:51 pm

Hi Everyone,

Probably a dumb question but I haven't got an answer on both Faq and manual.

Can I use a standard MFT Telephoto lens to have motorized zoom using Atem Software control on a Micro Studio Camera 4K? Anyone has a list of optics that works with that or do I need the external cable with a proper B4 to do it?

Thanks in advance.

Yep that's what I do and it works well !

Problem is that these optics aren't usually very good quality, optically speaking..

This is Blackmagic's list of compatible lenses

Panasonic Lumix G X Vario PZ 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Power O.I.S. Lens
Panasonic Lumix G X Vario PZ 45-175mm f/4.0-5.6 Zoom OIS Lens
Olympus 12-50mm f/3.5-6.3 ED M.Zuiko EZ Micro 4/3 Lens
Olympus 14-42mm M.Zuiko f/3.5-5.6 Digital ED EZ Lens

I've asked even one of the local supplier of BMD stuff but I receivedback then a "I'm not sure answer", of course we will need to choose the best price/value lens.

Thanks a lot for the answer Thibaud!

Nice lens, but not what the OP was looking for, he wants to remote zoom the lens, so a EZ/PZ zoom lens is the only one to fit his requirements. If he could go with an external zoom Servo, on its own remote p, then he could use any of the good MFT zooms designed for video production, like the Panasonic Leica 12-60mm and the new 10-25mm f/1.7, which are parfocal, and hold the focus while zooming, with step-less iris changes. Also the Olympus Pro Zooms 12-14mm f/2.8 and 12-100mm f/4.
Cheers

I have that lens on my Micro Studio and can control Zoom and Focus via the SDI Shield.

Interesting, none of the lens specifications I have seen for this lens mentions it having a Power Zoom or Servo zoom control? Auto/remote focus and Iris, yes — but not zoom. Also Olympus has released a new Pro version of the lens, which is nice, but no ability to use ND filters without using a Matte Box, but this works.

Can these external servos be controlled by the atem mini pro?

No, not without some type of HDMI interface. But wireless remote servos, as used in gimbals are available, some of the more expensive ones were designed for cine follow focus, and have a decent range.
Some use a wired remote, so you will be adding an additional cable, but range is better. Varizoom made a small wired focus Servo for B2/3 lenses that have a cine conversion kit and use a wired connection, along with its own battery. This would work for zoom also.

The answer could be yes.
I got this from bh Questions asked, it was written 6 years ago for the studio cameras so maybe it BMD can add it.

Panasonic Lumix G X Vario PZ 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. LensYes, you can. Note release from BMD here: We've just released Camera v1.9.8 which adds MFT zoom control for the Studio Camera and Studio Camera 4K via a connected LANC to the following lenses:Panasonic Lumix G X Vario PZ 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Power O.I.S. LensPanasonic Lumix G X Vario PZ 45-175mm f/4.0-5.6 Zoom OIS LensOlympus 12-50mm f/3.5-6.3 ED M.Zuiko EZ Micro 4/3 LensThe release can be downloaded on BMD website / support.
