ATEM Mini Big External Tally Lights ?

PostFri Jun 19, 2020 12:42 pm

Is there a way to connect big (maybe 5 x 9 cm) external tally lights to cameras connected to an ATEM Mini Pro?
Maybe an adapter that extracts the tally on/off from HDMI . . .

No, not that I am aware of. The issue is, the Talley light signal is part of the CCU commands embedded in the HDMI stream. You would need a HDMI device connected between the camera and switcher that could extract the Talley signal and trigger a large light. This may add delay to the camera signal path. So I would say this would not be practical.

Switchers that support external Talley lights, have a separate Talley light connection port on them, like Tricaster switchers use. B!D switchers do not have this feature. There are third party solutions for the big switchers that use a SDI return signal, so the Talley signal can be extracted.

I'm wondering if that might be possible to tap into from the SDK over the Ethernet connection?

Possibly, I do not know. You could PM Daniel and ask him, he has experience with DSK codes.

Cerevo Flextally is compatible with MiniPro through ETH port. Don't know if will work with non Pro model but worth checking out.

Just so everyone knows, we make a GPO Tally Box for ATEM that provides relay contact closures. This will work with any ATEM. This would connect via Ethernet so a Ethernet switch might be necessary.

As Julio suggested, the Cerevo FlexTally lights are about 10 x 5 cm in size and have direct support for all of the ATEM models over Ethernet, so this is probably going to be the most turnkey option. Each of the FlexTally lamps also have a GPIO output port so I suppose you could connect even larger lights if you wanted to:
https://flextally.cerevo.com/en/

Skaarhoj and Cuebi also make tally lights that support the ATEM switchers although their tally lights are a bit smaller in size than the FlexTally ones. The Cuebi lights do have an external trigger port for connecting to larger lights though:

In addition to the Blackmagic GPI & Tally Interface unit, the tally information is also available via the ATEM SDK, if you wanted to create a custom solution. The tally information is in a part of the ATEM SDK shared across all of the ATEM models, so it should work for ATEM switchers ranging from the ATEM Mini to the ATEM Constellation 8K.

Thanks for all your replies.

The FlexTally has big enough red lights for my use.
Is anyone here using the FlexTally system?

I have used the FlexTally lights and describe them in a bit more detail in this post:
