ATEM Constellation Audio on SDI Out

PostSun Oct 11, 2020 5:20 pm

Damn, I just found out yesterday that there is always the program audio on the outputs, even when I just loop some cameras directly through the outputs.

Wanted to use the ATEM Constellation not only as a mixer, but also a hub for other devices, but that won't work for me if there is always the program audio on the outputs.

Does anyone know a useful workaround? Or do you think that there will be a firmware update to loop not only the video signals, but also the audio signals through the ATEM?

Btw: it's also a shame that there is ony 1 program audio mix possible. So no chance to mix 2-4 completely different shows on the same device.

If those two things and more audio busses would be added to the ATEM software, than the Constellation would have been a complete game changer (still...10K for a 40x4K or 10x8K mixer is not too bad  , but I would have had no problem to pay more if those features would also be added to the firmware)

Do you think that there are any updates on this in the future?

I use the videohub 40x40 12g on all the inputs and outputs of my constellation. It allows me to route inputs to other devices with original audio.
It's a relatively expensive solution, but it gives an amazing amount of flexibility- well worth the investment.

Concerning mixing multiple programs on different M/Es I use a Teranex AV on the second program out to substitute audio from a second audio mixer. Works well and the Teranex has everything you need to ensure sync.

I also wanted to use the conversion functionality on the ATEM to have the same resolution and framerate on all inputs.
I guess I was asking to much

Yes I should not have said all inputs. I use the first 20 inputs via the videohub (sufficient for my uses) and then the 21-40 inputs are direct via a patch panel in case of videohub failure.

This leaves me 20 inputs for other devices.

Similarly for the outputs I use first 12 for the videohub and the rest are via a patch panel, again in case the videohub ever fails.

Apologies for my shorthand in the original post - I didn't feel the fine details added significantly to the answer. :-)

In terms of wanting additional flexibility on the audio channels embedded on different ATEM outputs, this has been requested several times already, but so far nothing has been implemented in the switchers to support this. The current audio output limitations make the ATEM's built-in audio features much less useful than they could be, in my opinion.

Here is some discussion of this from when the ATEM Constellation was first announced (even before it started shipping):
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=88822&p=498274#p496112

And again after some actual customers started using it:
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=99869

And here is some discussion as a more general feature request for audio output routing improvements that would be useful on any ATEM model:

This is the only conversation I've seen with problems - but it looks like the Constellation must be Master clock. https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=120907&hilit=MADI
