HyperDeck Shuttle and Studio chase play

PostFri Aug 24, 2012 1:37 am

I'm looking for an HD recorder that can play while recording the same file (chase play). My guess is Hyper Deck Shuttle and Studio can both do this but just want to make sure as the info on the web only mentions playing and recording simultaneously but on different files.

If so, is there a minimum number of seconds that needs to be recorded before I can start the chase play?

Thank you

The HyperDeck Shuttle, Studio, and Studio Pro do not support a chase play feature as you describe it. I'm also not sure where you read on the web that you can playback and record simultaneously with different files, but the HyperDecks cannot be in playback and record mode simultaneously. They can only record or playback at any given time.

Hope this clears things up.

I haven't used Telestream's Pipline for chase play but i saw a demo of it @NAB (i think NASCAR is using it). You would need another machine to actually play back the video since all it does is encode the live video and stream it to a server for recording.

Thanks Sarah for clearing this up. I was actually reading the manual on the HyperDeck Studio that I found on blackmagicdesign website but through google search.

There are only 2 pages. On page 1 under "How to Playback", it says, "If you’re recording, press
the play button once for instant playback
"

On page 2 under "Buttons and Controls" , "5. Record", it says "Recording commences the instant you
press the record button, even if you’re playing back a clip, so you’ll never miss a good take that’s happening.
"

That's where I took it as HyperDeck can record and play at the same time.

The manual was downloaded at this location http://www.blackmagic-design.com/media/ ... manual.pdf

If you’re recording, press the play button once for instant playback.
But there is no "...while recording is continued."

Please, BM-team tell us: is there a little chance to get the feature "chase play/timeshift/slow motion" while recording ?

Many harddisk-recorders for home use can do this !

Maybe only for the 19"-versions Hyperdeck Studio and Hyperdeck Studio Pro. I think, this is a really needed feature. Here are a lot of "low-budget-sports-video-producers" who really needs a cheep option for slomo and can't buy a NewTek 3Play for € 20.000,-. But € 3.000,- for 3 Hyperdecks were possible.... (Maybe, there is a simple control-software needed, but I think, here are software devellopers enough to create such als public domain - when the hardware would support this.)

Or do you plan a separate new "Hypedeck Studio slomo" ?

Well, I have only two comments. We don't talk about upcoming features, or planned features like this. But we have heard the request. And thanks for that as well!

As for many hard disk recorders for home use, that's a bit of a different story. If you are talking about a DVR the image is coming in compressed and being stored, then played back. It's a bit different then doing an encode and decode at the same time. But I understand the advantage for you of having that feature!

Perhaps a product designed around the H264 Pro Recorder? I suspect most of us would be happy with a high bitrate compressed file for replay. An all in one isocorder with a jog dial, a couple of speed buttons with HDMI/SDI ins, loops, and playouts would be epic.

It should probably also have a mark in/out button so you can create a highlights playlist, and the moon on a stick....covered in chocolate and diamonds.....

None, but typically we don't announce feature additions until they are almost ready (at a show) or are ready to launch. The chase play would be a pretty big feature that is not so simple to do.

So I'd expect whenever, if ever the powers that be decide to pull the trigger on that, it would take some development time.

But this is all speculation on my part. So don't misunderstand me. We've logged the request, but nothing has been decided or publicly announced. I don't want to create confusion.

We're still looking for this functionality too:

- timeshifting.

We have purchased a bunch of Atomos Ninja2's for record and playback; tied to our ATEM Switchers, and other venues. But, need to be able to timeshift our second-venue church service by 10 minutes using the live fiber-video connection (terminated in HDMI video).

Would love this feature very soon! Most likely would want in the Hyperdeck Studio (and/or Pro); but, might do it with Shuttle.

Thanks.
