software or hardware

PostFri Oct 12, 2012 1:24 am

i have a blackmagic decklink studio pci card installed on a windows computer shuttle.

I'm looking to capture video directly to H.264. Is this possible with just software?
If it's not possible to directly the H.264, is there software that will let me capture video at an adjustable compression rate while maintaining a good quality recording.

If it's not possible to do with software, what are my hardware options.

Thank you all for your help. I'm new to this forum and hope to become a contributor at some point.

If you already have a hardware capture card, then to capture h.264 you just need software that supports the card and CODEC. Wirecast from Telestream is an option that will capture straight to h.264. You can also use Flash Media Live Encoder and go straight to h.264 although it won't be MPEG4 encapsulated if I remember correctly. If you're on a Mac QuickTime Broadcaster can also capture straight to h.264. There are a bunch of programs that should do it, just tool around until you find one you like in your workflow.

Thanks,

Benjamin

With software that supports it, yes. However, most software does not natively support the h.264 Pro Recorder. The only one I know for sure works 100% is the Livestream ProCaster software. That locks you to Livestream though (not a bad lock though, IMO... Great service).

Wirestream and adobe live encoder are both a little out of my price range at the moment. I'm looking to setup 5 computers with software and hoping for something in the $100 range. i've searched quite a bit, but all i've found is software that does screen capture. maybe i'm using bad keywords.

on a side note.. i have the computer setup with LiveStream. This would work for my purposes, but it doesn't seem to make the file without having to login and go live.

Any more suggestions on software would be helpful.

thanks.

VLC or Virtualdub - either of these can capture from decklink directly to h264 for free.

i tried VirtualDub but couldn't find a way to record to H.264 or lower the bitrate, i don't think VLC is very reliable when it comes to recording.

Will have to find a link for the Flash media live encoder
