Focus demand, hard end stops

PostMon Mar 04, 2024 2:11 pm

Does the BM focus demand controlling an Olympus lens on a Micro studio 4K G2 have hard end stops so you can use focus marks on the controller?

Does the lens have hard stops?

Two things:

The focus demand sends relative positional data, not absolute; which actually makes it infuriating that it has hard stops. If you wind it towards one end while unplugged, then plug it in, it will not match the lens to that position. You have to manually run the wheel to each end to get the lens in-step with the control.

Secondly, without using parfocal lenses (e.g. not real TV lenses or something like Canon CN-E at minimum), it wouldn't be repeatable anyway. Minute changes to zoom drastically changes the focus.

I made a remote focus controller for the original micro studio camera about eight years ago that had presets you could save and recall, but quickly found that the tiniest bump of the zoom made the presets redundant.

I use a b4 type lens at the moment with a hard end stop focus demand. I don't see any use, for my type of work, for a focus wheel you can't put markers on.
