HDMI Cable Lengths

PostTue Oct 30, 2012 12:52 pm

I have 2 HD cameras feeding hdmi inputs on Television Studio. One camera picks up using a 6ft hdmi cable from camera to input of ATEM. The other camera is using a 25ft hdmi to input of ATEM. The 25 ft does not recognize the input on the camera.(no video) So my question is there a max length for hdmi cables for hdmi inputs on the ATEM?

We run 35 ft cables quite often. There is a difference in quality between manufacturers, but the 35 ft from Home Depot works very consistently. I think you may just have a bad cable.

Well I got this one from Lowes RCA 25 footer...but its nice you say a 35 footer is working because at Blackmagic they tell me about 10ft is max for hdmi...So if you sure, I will go buy one from another place better quality, its still cheaper than those hdmi-sdi mini converters!

I've not tried this myself, but there is a new cable technology called "RedMere" and it basically embeds a chip into each end of the cable to boost/recover signal, allowing longer cable runs and thinner cables, up to 65' for HDMI. Note that these cables are directional.

Check out a place with "mono" and "price" in the name and look for HDMI with RedMere. I am not associated with that company, but have purchased from them for years and have always been very happy with products and price

Get this device from monoprice:

HDMI® Extender using Cat5e/CAT6 cable extending up to 196 ft, Supporting DDC & HDCP

You have to run a pair of cat5e or cat6 cables. I have used 30m i.e 90ft cables. Works better than long hdmi cables, because long hdmi cables will stress your hdmi port on your camera. Cat 5e/6 cables are also cheaper.

Well, if you already have a long HDMI cable, you can also consider this:

HDMI cable is capable of associating with, the sound of both, the video, as well as, audio. One can also, make use of single HDMI cable for all kinds of video formats for televisions, as well, as personal computers.

I have a few Hall Research EX-HDMI-2A boxes that I'm hoping will work with the Television Studio or 1 M/E but I'm hesitant to make that kind of investment without trying it out first.

If you want a chance to try them out, they are available for $10 plus shipping at http://www.ebay.ca/itm/121021861610?ssP ... 335wt_1397

They're normally around $60. Can you provide more information about the Home Depot cable you were talking about?
