ATEM HDMI Inputs

PostMon Nov 12, 2012 7:19 am

Need to convert VGA to HDMI. Has anybody found a converter that works? Bought a cheapie that will convert a laptop VGA to 1080i signal. Works fine on a monitor but not on the Studio. Thanks. JCHITS

The ATLONA works great for me - produces good quailty.

http://www.atlona.com/Atlona-PC-Laptop- ... 1080p.html

This scaler is effectively a casualty of the acknolwedged mess-up by Black Magic when they removed support for 60hz devices in 3.2 and 3.3 firmware. They have promised to re-implement 60Hz compatability in 3.4 firmware.

However this still works on my TVS with 3.2 firmware (who knows why) - but not on my 1ME with 3.2 firmware (60Hz issue). It works with all ATEMS using 3.1.1 or earlier firmware (prior to embedded audio support).

I have one of the AT-HDVieW50 (http://www.atlona.com/Atlona-VGA-to-HDMI-Scaler-Converter-USB-Powered-International.html) which just allows powering the unit via USB and as Liam says it works quite well and you can manually choose the scaling output size.

We've been using this with great result:

Only drawback is that you need to see the menu if you want to change resolution.
Otherwise been working fine with TVS and ATEM 1 M/E.

So you are confirming this is working with 3.2 and above firmware? The spec page does not reference 59.94hz...only 60hz.

EDIT: although I see you are from Sweden so I would guess you are running in 50hz mode (and therefor not affected by the 60hz issue we have)

Liam, THANK YOU for the note about the Atlona and framerate. I have the same scaler and used it on several productions; I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure out why it wasn't working anymore.

So we gained audio mixer and lost 60hz. That is excellent information. Thanks again!

In my case, it's a TVS.

But yeah, the Atlona scaler has been an excellent piece of kit. Surprisingly affordable gear from them, too.

Very true about the spec!
Can't confirm 59.94 as I only used 50Hz as you thought.
Will do a check in the end of the week to see about 60Hz.

It is very odd I guess that my Atlona works on the TVS with 3.2 (but not my 1ME with same firmware). What firmware do you have?

Guess that is why I never did want to upgrade mine to 3.3... it may just be some fluke that it still works for me on 3.2. Here's hoping 3.4 will bring back support for 60hz... and that it will be VERY SOON.

ATEM HDMI Inputs

I am running V 3.3 1080i 59.94. Guy Cochran from DVeStore, where I bought my TVS from, says the Atlona HD 500/510 will not work with the latest firm ware. It's turning out to be less expensive to buy a laptop w/HDMI out. Hello Blackmagic, any suggestions?

It worked before. I have faith that it will again.

'till then, a laptop with HDMI does well. You'll need to fiddle with the output modes to get it to sync up, for the same reason. 59hz vs 60hz.

And, of course, hope no one brings their own laptop along to your production, which is why we keep the Atlona around!

Well, now I've done some tests running 3.3 on TVS.
My Sony Vaio laptop looked fine in 720p59.94 direct connected via HDMI.
Using the TvOne scan converter (http://www.tvone.com/1t-vs-624-photos.shtml) I can also confirm 1080i59.94 works fine but for some reason 720p59.94 remained black.
