ATEM 3.3 Released

PostMon Aug 27, 2012 11:40 am

Hi,

We have a new software update that includes SuperSource for ATEM 2 M/E Production Switchers as well as an enhanced SDK for software developers. This new SDK supports downloading images to the media players and other enhancements to give developers greater control over the ATEM functions.

This update is available now for download from the support section of the Blackmagic Design web site.

Cheers

Darren Lew.

Does this update fix the HDMI issue for the ATEM 1 M/E?

This update only adds super source and makes enhancements to the SDK.

One bug - Theres no Supersource button in the 1M/E view of the software (ie the tabbed view). It's only accessible in 2M/E mode which of course takes up a lot of screen real-estate.

I love my 1 M/E, and have had no issues.
Jealous about supersource now :)
Just wish there were more keyboard shortcuts for mapping on to my shuttle pro2.

Maybe in online broadcasting, but certainly not for those of us producing professional television...

I know. We deliver a lot of productions to traditional medias but we prefer to do everything in 720p or 1080p and downscale it before the delivery point. SD looks so nice when you supersample.

The industry seems to have taken the step now though. Sweden's three biggest media outlets all take and broadcast in HD so there's no need to do something in SD anymore. It's more a legacy pain, a cost reason then it is a requirement.

SD in 4:3 is dead! that's true.

BUT... SD in 16:9 is the present in many tv channels yet.

Is there a resource for 'consumers' to know what developers are working with the SDK to make applications that may be useful to other people or, in this instance, is the SDK typically used for in-house software development.

No there is not. Typically users of SDK are either doing software for in-house use, and probably dont want to give away, or be bothered by selling their app, or by 3rd party companies that will eventually sell their app. In which case we let them market their app.

One example of a very cool third party product is called "Just Macros" (FREE). This allows for the use of the XKeys product line to control ATEMs. It's in early stages currently but I've been giving it a little bit of a try out and I love it so far.
Here is a link to a page with example videos of the setup and the program and other documentation.
http://www.vis-ranger.com/ATEM/

I know from communications with the developer that the SDK is lacking some core very basic documentation which is making the development of these add-ons very cumbersome. Basic documentation which just describes each function and the types and order of the parameters.

Joshua - is there some way such documentation could be provided? It doesn't sound like it should be difficult to get (in fact it likely already exists).

These third party products are truly great add-ons to the capabilities provided by the ATEM line and I do hope BMD understands how valuable these third party developers are to the growth in use of the whole ATEM product line.

There are also other third party products in development and many of them have been discussed over on the http://www.ATEMUser.com web site. For instance here is a link to the Youtube video channel for an Arduino based control system. http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFJPNTH9QJuZ5iXNAxPd3_A

SDK documentation typically becomes more robust over time. But i'd be happy to send the request up the chain. That's not a commitment of when/if it will be done, just a request. These things if they are done will take time to get done.

Thanks for the response Joshua and I am sure note of your request up the chain will be warmly received by the 3rd party developer community. Is there someone inside BMD that is the internal "champion" for the developer community?

Thats unfortunate. Maybe this forum will lend to sharing, like it has with ideas and knowledge. If I had the spare time I'd gladly contribute.

Jeff... see my post above... several examples of 3rd party development going on. It's not all in-house and private work.

Right on. Thanks! I actually came back to post a link to the same guy you mentioned. Looks like some interesting stuff and, being all open source, will be a great tool.

i use the basics that skaahoj has developed to make my own broadcast panel. It takes some time to work out all the commands to make the software work, but when it does it is great. you just plug the device into a usb port and ethernet to atem1 and it works no software panel needed.

I'm also developing with the ATEM SDK at the moment...

Details of my current development (CutRec) are here:
http://dylanreeve.com/cutrec

A 1.0 version will be shipping soon.

It's good to see SDK improvements coming as there are still quite a few features that aren't immediately accessible to third-party developers yet.

@Dylan - Great idea. We just shot a show a couple of weeks ago doing exactly what you're doing - your app would have been super handy for the post process. If you ever need a 2M/E to test more than 8 inputs I'm happy to lend you ours.

Hah, look at that, you're right in Auckland and everything :)

The biggest issue I have to address before I can ship 1.0 is the ability to change button mapping. The other major frustration I'd like to address before I release the first public version is a way to accurately sync timecode recording on the computer with the cameras. Unfortunately that's proving difficult (currently I recommend an external USB LTC interface).

When I put a public release out I'll post something here. I may well be in touch about the 2M/E as well - that's something I'll tackle for the 2.0 release I think.
