Live video thru Ultrastudio 3D - Delay?

PostWed Nov 28, 2012 9:00 am

We have a 2 part System. 1 Stage with 3 projector screens, and a separate Video-production with 4 cameras and a separate videomixer (to post video online).

At the same time TV-production is streaming, the video is also sendt to the "distribution guy" so he can send it up on 2 of our screens on stage when he want to. This is controlled with a iMac and ProPresenter 5. We have a system where we are able to put text and other graphic in between and on top of the videostream with the ProPresenter Program (Not the right forum, but know it works)

My question is: If we send the video-production thru the Ultrastudio 3D card (In HD-SDI and out HD-SDI), will we get delay on the signal? If so, how many frames? or is it easyer to mix this in a separate mixer for the "distribution guy"?

Will there be a delay? Yes. A very noticable one. Just going from camera -> switcher will cause 1 or 2 frames of delay before it even reaches the computer. Even if the computer only adds 1 more frame (most likely much more) they delay will be quite noticable on the projector.

What we do is use a 2 m/e mixer (like the ATEM 2) and use 1 mix engine for the projectors, and 1 for broadcast, controlled by 2 different people. Our ProPresenter computer is then plugged into the mixer and used as an upstream key to overlay the words on top of the IMAG (camera shot).

We do something very similar, except we use MediaShout and it works very well. The only delay is the 1 frame from the ATEM switcher and only noticeable if one looks very closely at rapid motion.
