ATEM 1 recorded by usb2.

PostMon Aug 27, 2012 5:49 pm

Hello,

I want to know if you can capture video via a USB2 port with ATEM1?

just connecting the USB cable, or need any additional hardware?

Thank you very much, greetings.

The ATEM 1ME only support recording via USB3 as it outputs an uncompressed stream only (unlike the TVS which has the H.264 encoder built in).

So you could either, get a USB3 capable capture system, which can be a bit fiddly to do. Or you can pickup an H.264 Pro Recorder from us and use the SDI out into it which will capture to compressed H.264 (just like the TVStudio).

Or BMD can modify/update firmware or do some woodo stuff and make usb3.0 backward compatibile to usb 2.0 and make it work for capturing in h264 over usb2.0 mode.. And let the computer do the compression :) anyway, I do not have at the moment ATEM switcher, just planning to get one..
Edit: did anyone tried to capture that uncompressed stream with any other software except media express?

It's not as simple as changing the firmware to make the USB3 compatible with USB2 and enable h.264 encoding. The H.264 encoding requires hardware that does not exist on the ATEM 1ME/2ME. So there would be no reason to make the USB3 port work with USB2 as you wouldn't be able to use it to capture.

So still the best option for that would be an H.264 ProRecorder, or any other SDI recording device you prefer.

Whoa! That was qiuck! :) yes I thought that was a hardware encoder, but on the other side we can let the computer do the encoding..

Since the 1M/E and 2M/E don't have hardware h.264 encoders, USB 2.0 would be pointless, since it can't handle the bandwidth of uncompressed HD.

I'd suggest getting a compatible USB 3.0 card (~ $30) and either the Intensity Shuttle USB 3.0 or UltraStudio USB 3.0, and then you can capture in either uncompressed or compressed (MJPEG or DVCPro50 for compressed).

If you don't want to add a USB 3.0 card, you can always go with the Hyperdeck Shuttle and a SSD drive, that'll capture from the 1M/E.

We use the ATEM 1 with the BMD H.264 encoder to stream which works great. We run an output from the ATEM 1 to a patch panel and also the same for the h.264 encoder input. When we need to stream we use a patch cord to patch the two together. We have had no issues with this setup. True the encoder is pricey but price is relative -we included the cost in the project that required it.

JHeiser,

Looking at getting a couple to do the very same, any ideas if the BMD h264 enc is supported by Adobe Media Encoder?

Also do you create any vods from the recorded output? How much grief (if any) does it give your NLE?

We stream the h.264 out of the BMD h.264 encoder. Then using MX Light we stream and while streaming we record using the record option in MX Light. The recorded media drops right into Adobe PPro CS5.5 with no issues.

Thanks for that, I shall have to investigate MX Light and see if its compatible with our streaming providers.

Cheers!
